Outlook.com Inbox empty!

Hello,

Yesterday my outlook.com email inbox got empty all of sudden without any action I made myself.

I have tried multiple devices, browsers, web, desktop and mobile version with no success.

Other folders works properly, no filters are set, no rules are set, messages are not moved to another folder or archived or deleted to trash (or even "Recover items deleted").

New received emails shows properly in inbox.

Storage management shows 4.8GB space for Inbox but zero messages!

Sometimes I can find messages from inbox using search box (instant results, but not search results).

I have an active Microsoft 365 Personal subscription. 6.9GB out of 100GB (6%) used.

I cannot find any way to fix the problem or even contact support.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Are you using a personal Outlook.com account and not a work or school account?

Since this only affects one mailbox and happens everywhere, remove the account from Outlook and add it back as Exchange, then sign in to Outlook on the web, go to Settings, Mail, Sync email, and make sure no POP connection is listed. If the Inbox still shows storage but no emails and search cannot find them, this confirms a server side mailbox issue and you need to go to Help, Contact support in Outlook on the web to request a mailbox reindex or repair, which will rebuild and restore the Inbox view.

Are you still able to open any missing emails from search results?

Since it happens on all devices and apps, turn off Focused Inbox and Conversation view in Outlook on the web under Settings > Mail > Layout, then refresh the page. After that, go to Settings > General > Storage, open Inbox from there, move one email to another folder, then move it back to Inbox. This forces the mailbox to rebuild the Inbox view and can make hidden emails show again.

Hi, can you confirm if the issue happens only in the web Inbox view or also in the Outlook app?

Open Outlook.com, go to Inbox, then select View and reset the view by switching to another layout like Compact then back to Default, and set Sort to Date and Filter to All, then press F5 to refresh the page. Next, sign out of your account, clear browser cache, and sign back in using a private window to rule out corrupted session data. If you use the Outlook app, remove and re-add the account from Settings > Accounts > Email and accounts to resync the mailbox. These steps refresh the mailbox view and force a full sync which can restore hidden messages in the Inbox display.

Try the following checks step by step in Outlook.com to locate or restore the missing Inbox mail:

    1. Check Junk Email
      • Go to the Junk Email folder and look for messages that should be in Inbox.
      • If any belong in Inbox, select the message and choose Not junk > Not junk.
      • Note: Items in Junk Email are automatically removed after 30 days and cannot be recovered.
    2. Check Focused/Other tabs
      • If Focused Inbox is enabled, messages may have been moved to Other.
      • Select the Other tab and look for the missing messages.
      • If messages are there, select them and choose Move to > Move to Focused inbox.
    3. Check Deleted Items and recoverable items
      • Open the Deleted Items folder and see if Inbox messages were moved there.
      • If found, select the messages and choose Restore.
      • If not visible in Deleted Items, at the top of that folder select Recover items deleted from this folder.
      • If messages appear there, select them and choose Restore.
      • Notes:
        • Messages removed from Deleted Items are only recoverable for 30 days.
        • Recovery of items removed from Deleted Items must be done from a computer, not from Outlook mobile apps or a mobile browser.
    4. Check Filter settings
      • In Inbox, select Filter above the message list and make sure All is selected.
      • If using Outlook mobile apps or a mobile browser, clear any filter shown above the message list.
    5. Check rules and Archive
      • Go to Rules settings and verify there is no Inbox or Sweep rule moving messages out of Inbox (for example, to another folder or RSS feeds). Edit or delete any incorrect rule.
      • Open the Archive folder and check if Inbox messages were archived. If so, select them and choose Move to > Inbox.
    6. Check account activity and access
      • Review the Recent activity for the Microsoft account to ensure there is no unusual sign-in that might have changed or moved mail.

If none of these steps surface the missing messages and they are not in Junk, Deleted Items, or Recoverable Items, and storage is well below quota, the missing mail is likely not recoverable via self-service and direct Microsoft support contact is required.
