Sakkal Majalla font family

Overview

Sakkal Majalla is an Arabic typeface in the Naskh style, which is the most widely used style for typesetting many languages that use the Arabic script. Sakkal Majalla is an appropriate typeface for body text in long documents; it was designed for use in magazines, newspapers, and books, so it works well in reports, booklets, brochures, and presentations.

It has compact proportions and wide counters (the spaces within letters). The Latin letters, which were specially designed for this typeface, also have a distinctive style that can be used on its own.

Type designer Mamoun Sakkal designed Sakkal Majalla in 2005 as a robust, readable computer typeface that takes advantage of OpenType features to enhance Arabic typography, and Microsoft made it one of the core Arabic typefaces in Windows.

Its Latin complement was designed by Steve Matteson, to harmonize with the style of the Arabic. Sakkal Majalla can be used to typeset Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Sindhi, Kurdish, and Uighur. It has two weights and no italic style.
