I'm thinking about buying a new Windows device (laptop). Can I use the same email address that is on my current device (PC), to install and activate Windows on my new laptop? Or do they have to be separate?

Yep - you can use the same email address (your Microsoft account) on a new Windows laptop. The email account itself is not what limits installation or activation. It’s mainly used to sign in, sync settings, access apps, and sometimes link your license.

What matters for activation is the Windows license, not the email. If your current PC has a retail (transferable) license and it’s linked to your Microsoft account, you can usually move that license to the new laptop and activate Windows there, as long as it’s no longer in use on the old device. If your current PC came with Windows preinstalled (an OEM license), that license is tied to that specific hardware and generally cannot be transferred, so the new laptop would need its own license.

Most new laptops already come with Windows preinstalled and activated, so in that case you’d simply sign in with your existing Microsoft account and everything works under the same email with no conflict.
