When you create an organization account with Microsoft, it is set up as a standalone work or school account, which is separate from any personal Microsoft account you may have previously used to purchase services. This organizational account becomes the foundation of your Microsoft 365 tenant.
In your case, you do not need to own a website or custom domain yet. Microsoft automatically offers a free and temporary onmicrosoft.com domain specifically for organizations that are just getting started.
When prompted for the Organization (domain) during setup, you can enter something similar to:
******@yournonprofit.onmicrosoft.com
Once you successfully complete the subscription, the yournonprofit.onmicrosoft.com address will serve as your organization’s initial domain. This domain is official, fully supported, and standard for new Microsoft 365 tenants. If needed, you can add or replace it with a custom domain later.
The account created with ******@yournonprofit.onmicrosoft.com will automatically become the initial Global Administrator. You will use this account to sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, where you can create additional user accounts, manage licenses, and administer your organization’s tenant.
