The message “Try another verification method. That verification method isn't working right now” indicates that the current security method is blocked or unavailable. When there is no other verification method available, only the self-service recovery options can be used; support agents cannot send a password reset email or bypass verification, even if the account is signed in on a phone.

    Take these steps in order:

    1. Try a different verification method or network
      • If there is any other method on the account (alternate email, phone number, or app prompt), select that instead of the one that is failing.
      • Switch networks (for example, from Wi‑Fi to mobile data, or to a different Wi‑Fi) and try again, as network issues or risk-based blocks can cause this error.
      • Avoid repeated attempts in a short time; too many attempts can extend or reset a temporary block. Waiting 24 hours (up to a week in some cases) can allow temporary blocks to clear.
Details on this behavior and guidance are here under “How to fix ‘Try another verification method’ error message”:
      • Unusual activity, high volume of requests, or other risk signals can trigger a temporary block.
      • Recommended actions are:
        1. Try another method.
        2. Try another network.
        3. Wait (24 hours to up to 1 week).
        4. Use the sign-in helper.
    2. Use the Sign-in Helper
      • Run the sign-in helper tool to diagnose the sign-in issue and see available recovery options: Sign-in helper.
      • This tool is the primary path when normal verification is failing.
    3. If verification codes are not arriving
      • If codes are not being received at all, choose another method if any is available, or wait until access to the registered phone or email is possible.
      • Support agents are not allowed to send verification codes, password reset links, or change security details on the account.
This is documented under “Need more help?”:
      • If still not receiving codes, another method or waiting is required.
      • Agents cannot send verification codes or change account details.
    4. If locked out and recovery options fail
      • If two-step verification is turned on and none of the alternate methods (phone, email, authenticator) are accessible, the account cannot be recovered by support; agents are not allowed to override this.
      • If two-step verification is not turned on and the verification options shown during password reset are not recognized, use the Sign-in Helper first, then the account recovery form.
Use the Microsoft account recovery form:
      • Go to the Account recovery form.
      • Complete it from a device and location commonly used with the account (for example, home network, usual PC/phone) to improve recognition.
      • Provide as much accurate information as possible (previous passwords, usage details, etc.).
      • Microsoft reviews the form and responds to the contact email within about 24 hours.
    5. If the account “does not exist” or username/password stopped working
      • If a message appears that the Microsoft account does not exist, verify the exact email address and domain (for example, .com vs .co.uk) and spelling.
      • If still unable to sign in, follow the guidance in “My username and password have stopped working,” including using the “Recover your account” flow and, if needed, contacting support via the provided “Contact support” entry point.
    6. Contacting a real person
      • For additional technical help (for example, questions about the recovery process), use the official support channel: Contact Microsoft Support, select Get Help, and then Contact Support if still needed.
      • Important: Even when speaking with a human agent, they cannot send password reset links, cannot send verification codes, and cannot change security details on the account, due to security and privacy protections.

Because the account is already signed in on a phone, ensure that all available security methods on that signed-in session are checked (for example, security info under account settings) to see if an additional email or phone can be added while access is still available. If no additional method can be added and the current method is blocked, only the wait period, Sign-in Helper, and recovery form paths above are available.
