A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
The repeated “Is this you?” or “Are you trying to sign in?” prompts are part of Microsoft’s sign-in security (multi-factor verification). They appear when Microsoft needs an extra confirmation that the sign-in is legitimate.
To reduce annoyance while keeping security:
- Deny any prompts not initiated
- If a prompt appears that was not triggered, always select Deny. This protects the account if someone else is trying to sign in.
- Use a single, reliable verification method
- For personal accounts, Microsoft recommends using the Microsoft Authenticator app instead of SMS or email codes. Authenticator can send quick approval notifications and is generally less intrusive than repeated code entry.
- See: How to use the Microsoft Authenticator app.
- Review and clean up sign-in methods
- Go to the Security info page (for work/school accounts) or the Microsoft account security settings (for personal accounts).
- Remove outdated or duplicate methods and keep one or two primary methods (for example, Authenticator plus a phone or email backup). Fewer, up-to-date methods can reduce confusing prompts.
- Avoid responding to old or delayed prompts
- Sometimes a prompt is delayed and arrives after the sign-in is complete. Ignore or deny any prompt that does not match a sign-in just initiated.
If unrequested prompts continue frequently even when not signing in, check recent account activity and secure the account, as this can indicate someone else is trying to use the credentials.
