The display name for a personal Microsoft account and the legal name shown in some places are managed in different parts of the account system and do not always update at the same time.
For a personal Microsoft account used on Windows 11:
- The name shown on the Windows sign‑in screen and in most Microsoft consumer experiences comes from the Microsoft account display name. This is what was changed at the Edit name page.
- Name changes can take up to 24 hours to propagate across all Microsoft services and devices.
Actions to take:
- Confirm the display name change
- Go to Your info for the Microsoft account and make sure the new last name is shown.
- If needed, select Edit name, update it again, complete the Captcha, and select Save.
- Allow propagation time
- Wait at least 24 hours for the updated name to appear everywhere, including on Windows 11 and other Microsoft services.
- If this is a work or school account
- The legal name is controlled by the organization. Sign in to the work/school account profile page. If the name still cannot be changed or is incorrect, contact the organization’s IT admin, as some organizations do not allow users to change their names and changes can also take up to 24 hours to appear.
If, after 24 hours, the personal Microsoft account still shows the old legal name in specific places, use the Microsoft account support options to request further assistance, as support agents cannot directly change account details but can guide through the correct flows.
