To get a refund for a Microsoft 365 auto‑renewal, the subscription must be canceled first, and eligibility then depends on region and how it was purchased.
Follow these steps for a Microsoft 365 Basic, Personal, Family, or Premium subscription bought directly from Microsoft:
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365 and sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used to buy the subscription.
- It is important to sign in with the purchasing account.
- Find the Microsoft 365 subscription and select Manage.
- If Turn on recurring billing is shown instead of Manage, the subscription is already set to expire on the listed date and will not be charged again.
- On the next page, select Cancel (it may appear as Upgrade or Cancel).
- Scroll through and follow the on‑screen instructions to complete cancellation.
Refund notes and regional rules:
- Canceling is required to check refund eligibility; not all cancellations result in a refund.
- In Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Israel, Korea, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, or Turkey, a prorated refund may be available depending on subscription length and local rules. See the “Countries with prorated refunds for Microsoft subscriptions” article linked from the refund help page.
- If the subscription was purchased through Google Play or the Apple App Store, cancellation and any refund must be handled through their support:
- Google Play: see Learn about Google Play refund policies.
- Apple App Store: request a refund from Apple support.
Storage and service impact when canceling Microsoft 365:
- After canceling Microsoft 365 Basic or Personal, cloud storage reverts to 5 GB total (OneDrive + Outlook.com attachments) and 15 GB Outlook.com mailbox storage.
- After canceling Microsoft 365 Family or Premium, everyone the subscription was shared with also loses extra storage and other benefits.
- If usage is above the free allowance:
- New files cannot be uploaded, edited, or synced to OneDrive.
- Outlook.com email cannot be sent or received.
- After 12 months, OneDrive and all files in it may be deleted.
If additional help is needed (for example, a charge is not recognized or refund does not appear as expected), use Contact Microsoft Support from the refund article to reach billing support, describe the auto‑renewal charge, and have them review refund options.
