I want to move from my personal Microsoft monthly subscription of Outlook to a Family subscription of Microsoft Family Account - how can I go about it? I pay AED 7 monthly for access to Outlook and OneDrive?

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

Yes, you can move to a Microsoft Family plan even if it’s under your brother’s account.

To help narrow down the issue:

    1. Has your brother already sent you an invite, or not yet?
    2. Is your current plan active right now or already expired?

If you haven’t already, here’s how it works:

    • Ask your brother to invite you to the Microsoft Family subscription
    • He can do this from his Microsoft account > Services & subscriptions: https://account.microsoft.com/services Share with family
    • You accept the invite using your own Microsoft account

Once you join, you’ll get the benefits (Outlook, OneDrive storage, etc.) under your account.

For your current personal subscription: You don’t need to transfer it. Just turn off recurring billing or cancel it to avoid being charged twice.

    After successfully accepting invite:

    • Check if you able to see your Microsoft 365 Family subscription under the Services & subscriptions page here: https://account.microsoft.com/services and if it is active.
    • If active, open any Office app (like Word or Excel), go to File > Account, and click "Update License" to refresh your subscription status.

    If issue still persists:

Before installing, it’s a good idea to uninstall all existing versions of Office to avoid conflicts.

    Here’s how (Windows):

    • Open the Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
    • Look for any version of Microsoft Office or Office apps, right-click, then choose Uninstall. Please uninstall all Office apps.
    • Once that’s done, restart your computer just to be safe.

If you're using Mac, to uninstall all Office app: https://support.microsoft.com/office/uninstall-office-for-mac-eefa1199-5b58-43af-8a3d-b73dc1a8cae3

    Then, to reinstall Microsoft Office:

    • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services again.
    • Sign in using the same Microsoft account linked to your license.
    • Find your Microsoft 365 Subscription and click the "Install".
    • That will download the installer for the Office apps, just run it and follow the steps.

If anything’s unclear or the "Install" option still doesn’t show, feel free to let me know. I’ll be happy to walk you through it!

I really hope this information is helpful! Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

    Regards,

    John J.D.

To move from a Microsoft 365 Personal–type subscription to Microsoft 365 Family, the process depends on how the current subscription was purchased.

    1. If the subscription was bought directly from Microsoft (not via Apple/Google/retailer):
      1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the current subscription.
      2. Buy a Microsoft 365 Family subscription using that same account.
      3. The remaining days on the current subscription will automatically convert and be added to the new Family subscription. The exact number of days added depends on the plan being upgraded from and to.
      4. No need to reinstall apps when switching between Microsoft 365 Personal and Microsoft 365 Family.
    2. If the subscription was purchased through a third party (Apple App Store, Google Play, or another retailer):
      1. Manage the subscription through that billing provider (for example, Apple Subscriptions or Google Play Subscriptions).
      2. Cancel or change the existing plan there. Some third‑party providers may not support direct switching to another Microsoft 365 plan; in that case, cancel first, then after the cancellation period, purchase Microsoft 365 Family as a new subscription.
      3. If purchased from the iOS app specifically as Microsoft 365 Personal, cancel it in iOS Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions, wait until it is fully cancelled (up to 15 days after the scheduled renewal date), then return to Subscriptions to purchase Microsoft 365 Family.

After switching to Microsoft 365 Family, Outlook and OneDrive access continue under the new plan, and the subscription benefits can be shared with family members.
