    Hi @Susan Gordon

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Regarding that you want to switch from Microsoft personal account to a business account.

I’m happy to help explain this in a simple way.

A Microsoft personal account (for example, Outlook.com or Hotmail) is designed for individual use. It’s mainly for personal email, files, and apps, and it does not support creating a professional email address using your own website domain (such as you@yourwebsite.com).

A Microsoft 365 business account (also called a work account) is designed for businesses. It allows you to:

    • Use your own domain name for email (for example, info@yourwebsite.com
    • Manage your account through the Microsoft 365 admin center
    • Add or manage users in the future if needed

Because you want an email address connected to your website, a business account is the correct choice.

There is no direct “convert” button to turn a personal Microsoft 365 subscription into a business one.      If you are not tech‑savvy, I strongly recommend starting with Microsoft 365 Business Basic. It includes:

    • Business email with your own domain
    • Web‑based Outlook and Office apps
    • A simple setup experience

Microsoft also offers a free trial, which lets you try everything before committing to a paid plan.

    Note:

Please write down and keep the admin email and password you create during sign‑up. This account is required to manage billing, email, and subscriptions in the future.

Remember to cancel the trial subscription for the trial tenant if you don't want to use the business subscription.

Thank you for your time and understanding. While this message may not immediately resolve the issue, any additional details you share will help me assist you more effectively. I truly appreciate your patience and look forward to your response.

To move from a personal Microsoft 365 subscription (like Microsoft 365 Personal or Family) to a business subscription so that a custom email address can be used with a website, the supported path is to set up a Microsoft 365 for business plan and then move data over.

Here is a clear, high-level process:

    1. Get a Microsoft 365 business subscription
Choose a business plan that includes email (for example, Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Business Standard, or similar). During sign-up, you can:
      • Use a free onmicrosoft.com domain temporarily, or
      • Use/buy a domain that matches the website (for example, contoso.com).
For guided setup with a new or existing domain, see:
      • "Set up Microsoft 365 Business Basic with a new or existing domain" (linked from the FAQ below).
    2. Set up business email with the website domain
When signing up for Business Basic/Standard, use the Create a new business email account (advanced) option if a new domain is needed:
      1. On the How you'll sign in page during Microsoft 365 Business sign-up, choose Create a new business email account (advanced).
      2. Follow the steps to buy a new domain and enter the domain name to use (for example, contoso.com).
      3. After the domain purchase and setup, add users and licenses in the Microsoft 365 admin center and install apps as needed.
This gives a business email like ******@contoso.com that is tied to the website domain.
    3. Understand what changes when moving from personal to business
      • A Microsoft 365 Personal/Family subscription cannot be converted directly into a business subscription.
      • Instead, documents and files are moved from the personal environment into the new business environment.
      • Existing personal OneDrive/Outlook data stays with the personal account; it does not automatically transfer.
The official guidance for this scenario is:
      1. Follow the steps in Switch from Microsoft 365 for home to a business subscription (linked in the context below). This explains options for moving files and setting up the business tenant.
      2. Optionally work with a Microsoft 365 business partner to help with setup and migration.
      3. Product experts can also help with this process in some markets.
    4. Move email, calendar, and contacts into the new business account (optional but recommended)
If Outlook was used with the personal account and the same mail needs to appear in the business mailbox:
      • Export from the old account in Outlook
        1. In Outlook, choose File > Open & Export > Import/Export.
        2. Select Export to a File and follow the steps to export an Outlook Data File (.pst) including subfolders.
      • Import into the new business account in Outlook
        1. In Outlook, after the new business mailbox is added, choose File > Open & Export > Import/Export again.
        2. Select Import from another program or file and follow the steps to import the .pst file.
    5. Use the new business email address going forward
      • Sign in to Outlook with the new business account and use the new @yourdomain.com address for all business communication.
      • The personal subscription and account can still be kept for private use, or the personal subscription can be allowed to expire once sure all needed data has been moved.
    6. If help is needed with the transition
The official options for assistance when switching from a personal subscription to a business subscription are:
      • Follow the step-by-step guide in Switch from Microsoft 365 for home to a business subscription.
      • Work with a local Microsoft 365 business partner using Find the right partner for you.
      • In some markets, contact Microsoft product experts via Contact product experts online for free guidance.
