The best and safest method is to perform a clean install.

    Back up your important files

Download the official Windows 11 installer from Microsoft

    Create a bootable USB (8GB+)

    Boot from the USB

    When asked for a key:

    Click “I don’t have a product key.”

    Select Windows 11 Home

Delete existing partitions (this wipes the drive)

    Install Windows

Hello, yes, you will need to perform a clean install of Windows 11 Home on your laptop to completely remove the Windows 11 Professional which is currently installed.

Please check for the embedded key

Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run:

    wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey

If you see a key → your laptop HAS a license → activation should work after switching to Home.

May I please know the make and model of your device?

Hi! Let me help you with this.

Please follow the steps below to check the status of your license key.

Please click the Start menu, type in CMD, right-click, and run as administrator.

Then, on the command prompt window, type in

    slmgr -dli

This will show the kind of license that you have. It can be one of three types: Retail (FPP (Full Packaged Product)), OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer), and Volume Licensing. The last type is usually for organizations that have multiple license keys and are not for resale. It is the type that is most often used for pirate copies of Windows.

If it doesn't work with that command, type in this command instead, then press enter.

    slmgr /dlv

And then please copy and paste the result into our conversation. Thanks!

To check if your copy of Windows matches the key you have, please

Tap on Windows Key and the letter R on your keyboard to open the Run box, and in the Run box type winver, then press Enter. Please copy and paste the results here. Thanks!

On a laptop that originally came with Windows 11, the genuine license is usually a digital license tied to the device hardware and/or an OEM key stored in the firmware (BIOS/UEFI). A wrong Windows 11 Pro key will not remove that original entitlement, but Windows must be installed and activated correctly to use it.

    Follow these steps:

    1. Check the installed edition and activation status
      • Select Start > Settings > System > Activation.
      • Confirm which edition is installed (for example, Windows 11 Home vs Pro) and that the Activation state is Not active.
    2. Match the edition to the original license
Many consumer laptops ship with Windows 11 Home. If someone installed Windows 11 Pro and used an invalid key, the built‑in Home license will not activate a Pro installation.
      • If the laptop is licensed for Home but Pro is installed, reinstall or change to the correct edition so it matches the license. During a clean install, choose the edition that came with the device (often Home).
      • For first‑time or clean installs on a device that never had Windows 11 activated, a valid product key is required, or the correct OEM key in firmware must be detected automatically during setup.
    3. Let Windows use the embedded OEM key / digital license
When the correct edition is installed, Windows 11 normally activates automatically online using the device’s digital license or firmware key:
      • After installation, go to Settings > System > Activation and check if it shows as Activated.
      • If it is still not activated, run the Activation Troubleshooter: Start > Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot.
    4. If activation still fails
      • If the device is new and has never been activated, or activation errors appear, use the guidance in Get help with Windows activation errors.
      • If Windows originally came preinstalled and activation fails even with the correct edition, contact the device manufacturer for support, as OEM licenses are tied to that hardware.
      • If a previous repair or motherboard replacement was done by a third party, a new license might be required.
    5. If no valid key is found
If the laptop does not automatically activate and no valid OEM/digital license is detected, a new product key can be purchased from the Microsoft Store via Settings > System > Activation > Go to Microsoft Store.
