Dear Microsoft Support,

I am experiencing an issue with a meeting I organized.

After the meeting ended and all participants had left, I noticed that I no longer have access to the chat history or any recorded content (video/audio) from the meeting, even though I was the organizer.

Additionally, when I try to access the chat history, I receive an error. Specifically:

  • When I open the meeting from the calendar and click on the chat section, I receive the following error: “Sorry, chat is unavailable until you join the meeting.”
  • When I join the meeting and enter the chat, no messages are visible at all.
  • The recording is also missing. I can only see recordings from some other meetings that took place 10 days ago.

It has already been 2–3 hours since the meeting ended, and the issue still persists.

Could you please assist me in resolving this issue and help me recover the missing recording.

    Hi zlatko stijepovic,

Based on what you’ve shared in your follow‑up, this may be related to a Teams Free meeting chat and recording sync issue within that recurring meeting series, rather than a OneDrive storage problem.

The message “Sorry, chat is unavailable until you join the meeting” is often a sign that the meeting chat for that particular occurrence hasn’t fully transitioned into its normal post‑meeting state. When that happens, the chat and any associated recording may not become available as expected.

For Teams Free (personal accounts), meeting recordings are typically stored in Microsoft’s cloud for a limited period (usually up to 30 days) and aren’t saved to a OneDrive > Recordings folder, so not seeing anything there would be consistent with this setup.

If you haven’t already, it may be worth trying a few simple checks, such as signing out of Teams on all devices, clearing the Teams cache, and then checking again a bit later in case the chat or recording is still syncing. In some situations, if a recording upload doesn’t complete successfully, Teams will normally show a recording message in the meeting chat allowing the organizer to retry or download it. If there’s no recording entry in the chat and it’s also missing from your Teams data export, user‑side recovery options can be quite limited.

At that point, Microsoft support would be the best next step to confirm whether anything is still available on the backend. When contacting them, it can help to mention the affected meeting dates, confirm that this was a recurring Teams Free meeting, and include the exact error message you’re seeing. For future meetings, creating a new meeting series and doing a short test recording first may also help avoid a repeat of this issue.

I know this isn’t the outcome you were hoping for, but I hope the explanation helps clarify what may have happened here. If you decide to reach out to Microsoft support, they’ll be best positioned to confirm whether anything is still available on the backend. Please feel free to follow up if you have any questions along the way.

Please let me know if this proves useful to you, or if you would like assistance in navigating Microsoft's Support Channel.

If you are signed in to Teams with Microsoft 365 Family subscription, then you are on a Teams Personal account (aka. Teams Free). Call recordings with Teams Free are not saved in OneDrive, but are only saved to the Cloud, where they are available for 30 days.

If you cannot see the link to download this recording in the chat because the chat is not available for you, then there is a chance that the recording is still saved to the Cloud. You can try to export your chat history from the Cloud and check if the recording file (.mp4 file) is available in the exported file.

    Hi @zlatko stijepovic,

Good day, and thank you for reaching out.

Based on the information you provided, your symptoms align with a post‑meeting processing and storage issue, rather than a permissions issue.

The message “Sorry, chat is unavailable until you join the meeting” appearing after the meeting has ended typically indicates that the meeting chat thread has not fully transitioned to a post‑meeting state. This can occur when Microsoft Teams still considers the meeting session active or has not yet fully associated your organizer identity with the closed meeting thread.

Additionally, a meeting recording can be temporarily unavailable within the first few hours if the recording is still processing or if the upload has been delayed.

To assist you more accurately, could you please help clarify the following details:

    1. Are you able to access the chat history or see the recording when using Teams on the web?
    2. Are you using a work or school account (managed by your organization), or a personal account (such as Gmail, Hotmail, or Outlook.com)?
    3. Was this meeting a standard scheduled meeting, a channel meeting, or an instant “Meet now” session?
    • If it was a private meeting, recordings are saved to the organizer’s OneDrive > Recordings folder.
    • If it was a channel meeting, recordings are saved to the channel’s SharePoint site.
    1. Was the meeting created directly in Microsoft Teams, or in Outlook using the Teams add‑in?
    2. Was the meeting recorded manually, and did you see the “Recording has started” notification during the meeting? If so, was the recording stopped manually before the meeting ended?
    3. Do you still have available storage space in your OneDrive or the Teams SharePoint site, or is it currently full?

Your answers will help narrow down whether this issue is related to meeting type, recording location, backend processing, or account configuration.

Once I have a clearer understanding of your current situation, I’ll be happy to assist you with greater accuracy. Please feel free to share any additional details you believe are relevant. Screenshots are especially helpful and much appreciated.

In the meantime, you can try to clear your Teams cache by following this guide: Clear the Teams client cache - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn

This will allow Teams to reset and resynchronize the application and let you bypass the "“Sorry, chat is unavailable until you join the meeting.” error.

Thank you for your patience and your understanding. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to reach out.

I'm looking forward to your reply.

Based on the available information, there is no supported way in the provided context to recover a missing Teams meeting chat and recording in the exact scenario described (organizer loses access to chat and recording a few hours after the meeting, with “Sorry, chat is unavailable until you join the meeting” and an empty chat after joining).

The context does provide these relevant points:

    1. If a recording is missing, first confirm that it actually started:
      • If there is no system message in the meeting chat indicating that recording started, then the recording most likely never began and cannot be recovered.
      • If the recording was started but is not visible in chat, it may be due to a service issue or the confirmation dialog for Start recording being closed before confirming.
    2. If the recording did start but cannot be found in the chat:
      • For non-channel meetings, recordings are stored in the Recordings folder under My files in the recorder’s OneDrive.
      • For channel meetings, recordings are stored in the team’s SharePoint document library under Files > Recordings.
      • If the recording is not in the expected location, check whether it was deleted, moved, or expired and look in the OneDrive recycle bin and second-stage recycle bin.
    3. If the recording failed to upload to OneDrive/SharePoint:
      • Teams may temporarily store the recording for 21 days and show a special message in the meeting chat allowing a retry of the upload or a direct download. If that message is not present or indicates permanent deletion, the recording cannot be recovered.
    4. For issues where the recording button or link is missing or there are tenant/policy problems:
      • An admin can run the Teams Meeting Recording Test or the Meeting Recording Support Diagnostic in the Microsoft 365 admin center to verify that the account is correctly configured to record meetings.
    5. For chat and recording access:
      • People who do not have chat access at the time a meeting recording is saved (when recording stops or the meeting ends) cannot access the recording. In large contact-list scenarios (>150 people), some attendees only have chat access during the meeting and lose it afterward; they then also lose access to the recording.

However, the context does not describe a supported remediation path for an organizer who:

    • Loses access to the meeting chat entirely after the meeting, and
    • Cannot see any recording or chat content even after rejoining the meeting, and
    • Does not see the usual recording system messages or upload-failure messages in chat.

Because the context does not provide a documented recovery or fix for this specific combination of symptoms, no additional, reliable steps can be given beyond:

    • Checking OneDrive/SharePoint Recordings folders and recycle bins for the file.
    • Verifying whether any recording system messages or temporary-storage messages appear in the meeting chat (if it becomes accessible).
    • Having a Microsoft 365 administrator run the Teams recording diagnostics to confirm recording prerequisites.

If none of these reveal the recording, the context indicates that unrecovered or never-started recordings cannot be restored.
