After travelling to another country, I am now locked out of my hotmail. It is a very old account and the backup email belonging to my wife is discontinued, and the phone number attached is a home phone that can't accept text. I have submitted 4 recent emails with titles but am being rejected. I need help as I have many accounts and contacts that I can't live without. I am not very technical. Please help. If a real human called my home phone attached to my email I will answer.

Thankyou

Randy Boldt

Hey there! Nice to meet you!

Since you do not have access to the verification methods for a password reset, I'm afraid the only way to recover/unblock the account is through the account recovery web form: https://account.live.com/acsr

Important: If you have an active 2FA, ACSR will inform you that your recovery request will be ignored. If you only receive a message that the recovery request is either successful or indicates insufficient information, this means that 2FA is disabled.

You'll need to keep trying until you're verified by Microsoft, and you can do this up to 2 times every 24 hours.

If your Microsoft account recovery request was not granted, please review this link for tips on improving your chances of a successful recovery: https://support.microsoft.com/office/dc56c3e3-dff0-4ed5-8edb-60290eea6b53

Please be advised that Microsoft Support will not be able to assist you with manual recovery, unblock, and escalation for this case, as stated in this article, that they are not permitted to send password resets, access, or even change any details on the account:

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Best regards,

    Darhyl

Outlook.com/Hotmail consumer accounts can only be recovered through the built-in automated processes. Human support (including phone calls) cannot manually verify identity, change security info, or unlock the account outside these flows.

Given the situation (travel to another country, very old Hotmail account, backup email no longer exists, home phone that cannot receive texts, and rejected recovery attempts), the following options are available:

    1. If the account is blocked or locked after unusual activity
    • When sign-in shows that the account is blocked because of unusual activity, follow the steps in Unblock my Outlook.com account (linked from the Hotmail sign-in help article). This is the official path to remove a temporary block.
    • If, during sign-in, the page does not show a Next button and instead displays a link that starts with aka.ms/, select that link. It opens the Microsoft account reinstatement form. Fill it out completely and submit it.
      • A Microsoft Online Safety support agent will review the reinstatement request and respond by email.
      • Do not submit multiple reinstatement forms at the same time; that can delay processing.
    1. If too many attempts have been made (password, codes, or forms)
    • Multiple failed sign-in or recovery attempts can trigger temporary protection measures:
      • Password attempts may be blocked.
      • Security code requests (email/SMS) may be rate-limited.
      • Account recovery or reinstatement forms may hit daily limits.
    • When this happens, stop trying to sign in or reset for at least 24 hours (preferably a bit longer). Any additional attempts during this period can restart the lockout timer.
    1. Use the recovery/reinstatement forms as effectively as possible
    • When prompted for verification options that no longer work (old email, home phone), look for and select I don't have any of these if it is offered. This starts the account recovery process using other information.
    • When filling out the recovery or reinstatement forms:
      • Use a device and internet connection that were regularly used with this Hotmail account (for example, a home PC).
      • Provide as much accurate detail as possible, such as:
        • Subject lines of recent emails sent from the account.
        • Email addresses of frequent contacts.
        • Any previous passwords remembered.
      • If a submission is rejected, wait until any daily limit resets, then submit again with the most complete and accurate information available.
    1. After regaining access
    • As soon as access is restored, update security information so this situation does not recur:
      • Go to the Security basics page and sign in.
      • Select Advanced security options > Get started.
      • Add a current mobile phone number and a working alternate email address.
      • Confirm them using the security codes sent.
    • Consider adding a trusted device so frequent sign-ins on that device do not require a code:
      • On that device, go to the Security settings page and sign in.
      • Enter a security code.
      • Select I sign in frequently on this device. Don't ask me for a code. and submit.
    1. If the account is very old and inactive
    • If the Hotmail/Outlook.com account has not been signed into for more than 2 years, it may have been deleted. In that case, recovery is not possible and the automated tools will not be able to restore it.

If the automated recovery and reinstatement processes continue to reject the information provided, there is no additional manual override or phone-based verification available for consumer Hotmail/Outlook.com accounts. Access can only be restored when the automated systems determine that the information supplied proves ownership of the account.
