    Good day @Pabba, Gayathri,

In SharePoint Online and OneDrive, this type of error usually means the file or its parent site was renamed, moved to a different location, or deleted. Microsoft has a step‑by‑step guide that walks through the standard checks and recovery options, including using the Recycle Bin and verifying whether the site or library still exists. You may find this guidance helpful: Error 404 File/Page not found in OneDrive or SharePoint - SharePoint | Microsoft Learn

Some of the recovery steps described there require SharePoint Administrator permissions. If you’re an end user without admin rights, I’d recommend contacting your Microsoft 365 administrator and asking them to check this on your behalf.

Regarding your question about who deleted the file and when, that information is typically available through audit logs in the Microsoft Purview portal, under Audit. An admin can search within a specific date and time range and filter activities to “Deleted file” to see whether the file was removed, by whom. This process is outlined here for reference: How to Audit File Deletions in SharePoint Online? - SharePoint Diary

It’s also worth keeping in mind that access to Microsoft Purview auditing depends on your organization’s subscription or add‑on licensing, so not all tenants may have this feature enabled.

As this is a user‑to‑user support forum, I don’t have visibility into your tenant or the ability to trace or restore files directly. Still, I hope the guidance above helps you and your admin identify what happened and take the next appropriate steps.

I hope this information and the documentation help clarify things for you. If you have any updates or follow‑up questions, please feel free to leave a comment under this post. This will make it easier for me to receive notifications and follow up with you to continue providing support.

    Thank you for your understanding.

The 404 error indicates that the Excel file or its site location in SharePoint has been renamed, moved, or deleted.

To investigate what happened and who deleted or moved it, a SharePoint administrator must perform these checks:

    1. Check if the site or home page was deleted
      • If the site home page or library was deleted, the file may be gone with it.
      • Browse to the site recycle bin:
          • Replace <tenantname> with the organization name and <sitename> with the site name.
      • Look for the file (or its library/home page) in the Recycle Bin.
      • If found, select it and choose Restore.
      • If not found, select Second-stage recycle bin at the bottom of the page and check there. If it is not in second-stage, it has been permanently deleted.
    2. Check if the file or folder was deleted from the library
      • In the SharePoint site where the file used to be, open the document library.
      • Open the library’s Recycle Bin (via Site Contents > Recycle Bin) and search for the file.
      • If found, restore it.
      • If not found, it may be permanently deleted; further recovery would require admin-level options or backups.
    3. Check if the site URL or file path was changed (redirects)
      • The 404 can occur if the site URL was changed or a redirect removed.
      • An admin should review site redirects as described in Manage site redirects to see if the site or library was moved to a new URL.
      • If a redirect was removed using the documented steps, a 404 error can occur when using old links.
    4. Check if the entire site was deleted
      • A SharePoint admin should go to the Deleted sites page in the SharePoint admin center.
      • If the site containing the file is listed there, select it and choose Restore.
      • If the deleted site was the root site, it must be restored and then replaced again following the root-site replacement steps.
    5. Identify who deleted or changed it
      • Identifying who deleted or moved the file requires SharePoint audit logs or admin tools, which are not covered in the provided context. An admin should be contacted to review audit logs and activity.

If the file is restored and opens, previous versions can be viewed from within Excel (if stored in SharePoint/OneDrive with versioning enabled):

    • Open the file, go to File > Version History (or File > History depending on the client) and open or restore earlier versions.

If the file or site cannot be found in any recycle bin or deleted-sites list, it has likely been permanently deleted and cannot be recovered with the native methods described in the context. In that case, contact the Microsoft 365/SharePoint administrator for any additional backup or recovery options.
