    Hi Delma Casabene,

I understand how confusing it can be when a webcam test reports issues like “too few colors” after you expect the camera to be working normally. Have you already tried the Q&A Assist suggestions? In addition, please try the following.

Step 1 – Check the camera’s video format

    1. Open “Settings”
    2. Go to “Bluetooth & devices” > “Cameras”
    3. Select your Integrated webcam
    4. Under “Video settings”, look for “Video format” or similar options
      • If available, try switching between formats (for example, from a low‑bandwidth format to a default or higher‑quality option), then reopen the Camera app and test again.

Step 2 – Reinstall the webcam driver

    1. Right‑click Start > “Device Manager”
    2. Expand “Cameras”
    3. Right‑click your webcam > “Uninstall device”
    4. Restart the PC Windows will automatically reinstall the correct driver on reboot.

    Open the Settings App.

Go to Bluetooth and Devices - Cameras.

    Click your Integrated webcam.

On the next window are the available settings for your webcam, try adjusting settings like Brightness, Saturation and Contrast on your webcam.

The webcam test result about “too few colors” and the note about the webcam LED brightness both point to image quality and lighting issues rather than a basic hardware fault.

To improve color reproduction and overall image quality on the HP webcam:

    1. Adjust the physical test setup and lighting
      • Avoid reflections: Tilt the laptop screen and, if using a mirror for testing, adjust both the screen and mirror angle so that ceiling or ambient lights do not reflect into the camera. Reflections can wash out colors and reduce apparent color range.
      • Control brightness: Too much or too little light affects the captured colors. Adjust room lighting until the camera preview shows a clear image without glare or heavy shadows. Use the Windows Camera app to check the live image and tune lighting until it looks clear and natural.
      • Use neutral backgrounds: For testing, ensure the captured image is mostly neutral colors (black, gray, white). Bright or saturated colors and changing backgrounds can introduce “noise” and distort test measurements.
    2. Validate what the camera is actually capturing
      • If the screen preview looks different from the saved image, connect a second monitor and use it to visually confirm the captured image. For laptops with a rear camera, you can point that camera at the main screen and compare what is displayed versus what is captured to ensure the test is evaluating the real output correctly.
    3. Check camera positioning for test charts
      • If using a color test chart (such as xRite ColorChecker) with HLK-style tests, make sure the chart and any required markers are fully within the camera’s field of view and clearly visible under the test lighting. Poor framing or too dark/bright images can cause color and quality metrics to fail.
    4. Improve lighting for color tests
      • For more formal color accuracy tests, use dimmable lights and a calibrated lux meter to reach the target illumination (for example, 80 or 20 lux depending on the test). Stable, even lighting helps the camera reproduce a wider and more accurate range of colors.
    5. About the webcam LED brightness
      • The LED indicator is not part of the color test itself; it simply shows when the camera is active. Ensuring the LED “shines brightly” is not required for the image quality tests. Focus on the scene lighting and camera view rather than the LED brightness.

If, after optimizing lighting, angles, and background, the test still reports too few colors, the limitation may be in the camera sensor or its processing, and there may be no further software-side adjustment available beyond driver updates from HP.
