I have been trying to cancel my Microsoft Teams Essentials subscription for months. I am retired from work and no longer require it. I have accessed my Microsoft account but the subscription is not listed. I have the original email confirming my order but cannot access the invoice attached as the admin centre will not allow me access.

    Dear @Philip Shaw,

Good day! Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

I want to begin by sincerely apologizing for the frustration and inconvenience this issue has caused you.

Since cancel subscription and refund request things need action/approval from Billing team, here are some steps I recommend you try:

Method 1: Contact Microsoft Data Protection Support by Phone

Since you are locked out, the most direct method is to call Microsoft's support line to raise a request for cancelling the unexpected subscription. For a full list of regional numbers, you can also visit this official page: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support. The support team will assist you as soon as possible.

Method 2: Create a Temporary Account (Trial Tenant) to Submit a Support Ticket

If you have difficulty reaching an agent by phone as well as cannot access to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, there is a reliable workaround. This involves creating a new, temporary Microsoft 365 account to contact the support team online.

    • Sign up for a new Microsoft 365 Business trial using this link: Compare All Microsoft 365 Plans.
    • Once the trial account is created, log in to its Admin Center.
    • From the Admin Center, open a new Service Request.
    • In the ticket description, explain that you need to cancel the subscription of your primary tenant (your.onmicrosoft.com) and that you need to speak with the Billing team.
    • For reference:  Get support | Microsoft Docs

Important: Please remember to cancel the trial subscription after your original account issue is resolved to avoid any future charges.

Once you can reach out to the Billing Team, you can share:

    • The exact charge description from your bank or credit‑card statement
    • Last 4 digits of the card used
    • The original email confirming your order
    • A screenshot of the charge (optional but helpful)

Contact a Reseller (if applicable): If your Office subscriptions are managed through a federated partner or reseller and the Global Admin cannot open a service request, you should contact the reseller’s support provider. The reseller can assist with initiating the request and coordinating with the Office support team.

Please understand that as forum moderator, my primary goal is to provide helpful guidance and support through general troubleshooting steps. While I don’t have access to internal systems required to resolve account issues, I truly appreciate your understanding of these limitations. I genuinely hope the information I share helps guide you in the right direction, and I'm always here to assist as much as I can within my scope.

I hope this helps! Please feel free to reply below if you have any update or further concern.

Your understanding and co-operation are highly appreciated. Thanks for your precious time. Have a nice day!

Use two parallel checks: where the subscription was purchased and which account is signed in, then cancel from the correct place.

    1. Confirm where Teams Essentials was purchased
    • If it was bought directly from Microsoft (online with a Microsoft account), it should appear under that Microsoft account’s services/subscriptions.
    • If it was bought through a third party (for example, a retailer like Amazon/Best Buy/Harvey Norman, or via Apple App Store/Google Play), the subscription and cancellation are handled by that provider, not by Microsoft.
      • For Google Play purchases, see Learn about Google Play refund policies.
      • For Apple App Store purchases, request a refund from Apple support.
    1. Check the correct Microsoft account Because the subscription is not listed, it is likely associated with a different Microsoft account than the one currently used.
    • Sign out of all Microsoft accounts in the browser.
    • Sign back in at the services/subscriptions page with each possible Microsoft account (for example, work email used when ordering, personal Outlook/Hotmail, or any other Microsoft account).
    • For personal subscriptions, use the Services and subscriptions page and look for the Teams Essentials subscription. If found, use Manage to cancel or turn off recurring billing.
    1. If the subscription was purchased through a third party If, after checking all Microsoft accounts, the subscription still does not appear, assume it was purchased via a third party:
    • If purchased from a retailer (Amazon, Best Buy, Harvey Norman, etc.), contact that retailer’s support and provide the order confirmation email so they can cancel the subscription.
    • If purchased via Google Play or Apple App Store, use their respective support and refund flows as described above.
    1. If the subscription shows but cannot be cancelled If the subscription appears but there is no cancel/turn off recurring billing option:
    • Verify there is no overdue balance; if there is, pay the outstanding amount first. Cancellation is blocked while money is owing.
    • If the subscription shows “Turn on recurring billing,” it is already set to expire on the date shown and no further action is required.
    1. If access to the Microsoft 365 admin center is blocked Teams Essentials for business may have been set up under a work tenant where the retired work account was the admin. If that admin account is no longer accessible and the subscription does not appear under any personal Microsoft account, support intervention is required. Use Microsoft’s guided support for subscriptions and billing to reach support, explain that the Teams Essentials subscription is not visible under any current account, and provide the original order confirmation email as proof of purchase.
    2. If still unable to locate or cancel If none of the above paths locate the subscription or allow cancellation, use the guided support flow for “Unable to cancel your Microsoft subscription” and follow the prompts so an agent can look up the subscription by payment method and order details from the confirmation email.
