My second laptop experiencing this problem. The first time I purchased a new laptop as no idea why it happened. Now I know it is a Windows problem from many online searches when an update is done.

I need to know the best way to get the camera working for my online meetings. I have done so much troubleshooting through websites (including HP as brand of my laptop) and nothing is working. This laptop is 2 years old - HP Spectre

Look at the function keys (F1 - F12) on your keyboard, if one of them has a camera icon, press that key or Fn + that key to unlock the webcam.

    2

If that was not the problem, look at the camera lens above your screen, is there a small privacy slider that needs to be opened to access the webcam?

    3

If the webcam is still not working, go to the support page for your laptop on the manufacturers website, then from there, download and re-install the version of webcam drivers they provide.

If you have any difficulty locating that support page, click your Start Button, then just type msinfo and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting System Information window.

Follow these steps in order, testing the camera after each major step.

    1. Run the built-in camera troubleshooter
      1. Select Start > Settings > System.
      2. Select Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
      3. Find Camera and select Run.
    2. Test whether the issue is app-specific
      1. Open Start > Camera.
      2. Check if the preview works.
      3. If the camera works here but not in meeting apps, adjust the camera settings inside the meeting app (Teams/Zoom/etc.) and select the correct camera device.
    3. Check Windows Update and optional driver updates
      1. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update (or Update & Security > Windows Update depending on build).
      2. Select Check for updates and install everything offered.
      3. If available, select Advanced options > Optional updates or View optional updates and install any camera or imaging device driver updates.
      4. Restart the PC using Start > Power > Restart (do not just wake from sleep).
      5. Test again with the Camera app.
    4. Verify antivirus or firewall is not blocking the camera
      1. Open the installed antivirus or security suite.
      2. Look in Settings/Tools/Protection for any webcam or camera protection feature.
      3. Temporarily disable that protection and test the camera.
    5. Force Windows to use the in-box USB Video Class (UVC) driver This can resolve issues caused by a vendor driver that broke after an update.
      1. Select Start, type device manager, and open Device Manager.
      2. Locate the webcam under Cameras or Imaging devices.
      3. Right-click the webcam and select Update driver.
      4. Select Browse my computer for drivers.
      5. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
      6. Choose USB Video Device and select Next to apply it.
      7. Close Device Manager and test with the Camera app.

Note: The in-box UVC driver may not support all advanced features (for example, Windows Hello face sign-in) that the HP driver provided.

    6. If the camera is completely missing in Device Manager
      1. Check the keyboard for a function key with a camera icon (for example, Fn + F4 on some HP models) and press it to toggle the webcam on.
      2. Check for a physical privacy shutter on the laptop’s camera and slide it open.
      3. After toggling, re-open Device Manager and see if the camera appears under Cameras or Imaging devices.
    7. If specific error codes appear
      • 0x80070490 or 0x80004003: Run the camera troubleshooter (as in step 1) and then reinstall the camera driver from Device Manager (uninstall device, restart, then Update driver > Search automatically for drivers).
      • 0xA00F4294: Update the camera driver from Device Manager using Update driver > Search automatically for drivers, then restart.

If these steps restore functionality in the Windows Camera app but not in meeting software, the remaining work is to adjust that specific app’s video settings or reinstall that app.
