To recover a Surface/Surface Laptop that powers on but shows no image on the built‑in screen or on HDMI/DP/USB‑C, follow these steps in order:
- Basic power and connection checks
- Make sure the laptop is charged and the power LED on the charger is on.
- Disconnect all peripherals (docks, USB devices, SD cards, external GPUs, etc.).
- If using an external monitor, verify:
- The monitor is powered on.
- The correct input (HDMI/DP/USB‑C) is selected on the monitor.
- Try a different cable and, if possible, a different monitor.
- Try to wake or switch the display mode Even if nothing is visible, use the Windows display shortcuts:
- Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B once. This resets the graphics driver; if Windows is running, the screen should blink and a beep may sound.
- Press Windows logo key + P, then press P again and Enter a few times (wait ~5 seconds between tries) to cycle through display modes (PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, Second screen only).
- Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to see if the security screen appears; if it does, the issue is with the desktop shell and not the panel.
- Force a full restart
- Hold the power button for 10–20 seconds until the device turns off.
- Wait 10 seconds, then power it on again.
- Try Safe Mode (if any image appears at boot) If at any point you get image (even briefly):
- Force shutdown with the power button for 10 seconds.
- Turn it on and interrupt startup 2–3 times to enter Windows Recovery Environment.
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press F5 to start Safe Mode with Networking.
- In Safe Mode:
- Open Device Manager → Display adapters.
- Right‑click the GPU → Update driver.
- If the problem started after an update, choose Roll back driver.
- If you see only a cursor on a black screen If eventually the cursor appears on a black background:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- In the Processes tab, find Windows Explorer, right‑click → Restart.
- If Windows Explorer is missing, go to File > Run new task, type
explorer.exe, press Enter. - System Restore (if the issue started recently) If you can reach Recovery or Safe Mode:
- Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem started and complete the wizard.
- If there is never any image (not even logo/BIOS) If the screen is always black and no external monitor shows anything (no Surface logo, no BIOS, no spinning dots):
- This usually indicates a hardware failure (display, GPU, or mainboard) rather than Windows.
- At this point, professional service is required. Contact Microsoft Surface support or an authorized service center to have the device diagnosed and repaired.
Because there is no image even in BIOS and on external displays, the last case is very likely, and service will probably be necessary.
