On my Windows 11 computer, I have Microsoft Edge pinned to the taskbar. When I right-click it in Start, it says "Pin to taskbar" when already there. When I right-click it in the taskbar, it says "Unpin to taskbar." Why is this and how do I fix this?

I think you’re referring to me, Paulo, since I’m the only one here. Anyway, it’s normal to still see the “Pin to taskbar” option even if Microsoft Edge is already pinned.

As mentioned earlier, if the Edge icon on your taskbar has a small profile picture overlay, that means it’s a shortcut tied to a specific profile you’re using. On the other hand, the Edge shortcut you see in the Start menu or Windows Search is the default one, which comes directly from the main executable file.

Basically, even though they open the same browser, they are treated as separate shortcuts in Windows. The pinned one with the profile overlay launches a specific profile directly, while the default shortcut opens Edge using the standard setup, which may follow your last used or default profile.

    Hi,

Could you check the Microsoft Edge icon pinned on your taskbar? If it shows a small profile picture overlay in the corner, that means it’s a profile-specific shortcut.

These profile shortcuts are different from the one you see in the Start Menu or Windows Search. That is the default shortcut that launch Edge using the main executable, while a profile shortcut is tied to a specific user profile and opens directly into that profile when launched. So basically,

This behavior is expected and not an error.

In Windows 11, pinning and unpinning apps is context‑sensitive:

    • When right-clicking Edge on the taskbar, the menu reflects the current state of that taskbar icon, so it correctly shows Unpin from taskbar because Edge is already pinned there.
    • When right-clicking Edge in Start or Search, the menu reflects the pin state of that particular entry, not the taskbar icon that already exists. The option Pin to taskbar is simply the action that can be performed from that location; Windows does not change the label to “Unpin from taskbar” based on whether the app is already pinned.

Selecting Pin to taskbar again from Start/Search when Edge is already pinned does not create a duplicate icon; it just keeps the existing pin. There is nothing to fix, and the system is working as designed.

To manage the pin state if needed:

    • To pin Edge to the taskbar (if it were not already pinned):
      1. In the Search box on the taskbar, type Microsoft Edge.
      2. Right-click Microsoft Edge and select Pin to taskbar.
    • To unpin Edge from the taskbar:
      1. Right-click the Edge icon on the taskbar.
      2. Select Unpin from taskbar.
