Facial Recognition - unable to set up

Facial recognition stopped working (this is after I used Zoom which I think may have caused the issue). I turned off facial recognition and tried to set it up again. I get an error message saying "something went wrong". When I go into the camera - surface camera rear - I get an error message "camera preview failed to start". It doesn't allow me to troubleshoot the issue, just sends me back to contact support. I've restarted several times and the issue continues.

Thank you!

    Hi Paula Bresnahan,

I can see that Q&A Assist has already shared the initial guidance, which covers the standard Windows Hello Face setup checks, Surface updates and built‑in troubleshooting. Please make sure those steps are completed first, as they resolve the most common causes of this issue.

If the problem continues, please try the additional steps below. These focus on confirming whether the Surface camera and its background components are being initialized correctly by Windows:

Step 1: Verify the camera and IR devices in Device Manager

Windows Hello Face depends on a dedicated infrared (IR) camera in addition to the standard camera.

    1. Right‑click Start and open Device Manager
    2. Expand Cameras
    3. Confirm that Surface camera entries (front / rear and IR, if listed) appear and do not show warning icons
    4. If any camera device shows an error or appears disabled:
    • Right‑click the device and select Uninstall device
      • Restart the device and allow Windows to automatically reinstall the drivers

After restarting, test the Camera app before opening other applications.

Step 2: Confirm required Windows services are running

If these services are not running, the camera and Windows Hello features may not function correctly.

    1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter
    2. Verify that the following services are Running and set to Automatic:
      • Windows Biometric Service
      • Windows Camera Frame Server
      • Windows Camera Frame Server Monitor
    3. Start any service that is stopped, then restart the device

Step 3: Reset the Windows Camera app

Since you are seeing “camera preview failed to start”, the Camera app itself may need to be reset.

    1. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps
    2. Locate Camera
    3. Select Advanced options
    4. Choose Repair, then Reset
    5. Restart the device and test the Camera app again

Step 4: Check for camera conflicts with background apps

Some applications can keep the camera reserved in the background.

    • Fully close any video or conferencing apps (such as Zoom or Teams)
    • Open Task Manager to confirm they are not running
    • Restart the device
    • Test the Camera app first, before launching other applications

This helps rule out software conflicts without assuming a specific app is the cause.

Please let me know the results after trying these additional steps and I’ll be happy to advise on the next actions if needed.
