    Good day Geoff Leeson

Based on what you described, you’re having trouble installing KB5086672 and the Windows troubleshooter isn’t working. You can try the steps below.

    1. Basic checks first
    • Make sure drive C: has at least 10 GB of free space.
    • Temporarily disable any third‑party antivirus or security software, then restart the PC and try Windows Update again.
    1. Try manual installation
    • Press Win + R, type winver and note your Windows edition and version.
    • Go to the Microsoft Update Catalog, search for KB5086672, and download the package that exactly matches your Windows version and system architecture (for example, Windows 11 22H2 x64).
    • Run the downloaded file and complete the installation.

If the issue continues, please share the exact error code or message shown during the update so we could look into it together!

As it is windows 11 you can try the recovery option in settings.

Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using windows update, select Reinstall now. Once completed check the update again.

Use the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter first, then apply the general Windows Update repair steps.

    1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter (Windows 11):
      • Select Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
      • Under Most frequent, select Windows Update > Run.
      • When it finishes, restart the device and try installing KB5086672 again from Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
    2. If the troubleshooter in Settings will not run, use the Get Help app troubleshooter (Windows 10 guidance also applies as a general method):
      • Open the Get Help app and run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter from there:
        • Use Run the troubleshooter in Get Help (this automatically runs diagnostics and attempts to fix most update problems).
      • After it completes, restart and check for updates again.
    3. If updates still fail, follow the general troubleshooting steps for Windows Update problems:
      • Back up important personal files first (for example, using Windows Backup or OneDrive) as recommended in the general guidance.
      • Run the Windows Update troubleshooter again from Start > Settings > Update & Security (or System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters on Windows 11), then Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter, and follow on‑screen instructions.
      • Restart the device and re‑try Check for updates.

If KB5086672 still will not install after these steps, use the detailed guidance under Troubleshoot problems updating Windows to match any specific error code shown (for example, 0x800705b4, 0x80070002, 0x80070422, etc.) and apply the targeted fixes listed there (such as checking services, resetting SoftwareDistribution, or addressing access/driver issues).
