Why are Polls not available in Teams Town Halls?

My organization is trying to use Teams Town Halls, as that appears to be where the bulk of the Microsoft R&D is going for online events. Everything I see online says that in order to have Polls available in Teams Town Halls you need a Premium license, which we have. Whenever I create an event to test out the Polls feature, I click on the Plus button to add Polls to the event and it is not there. No matter if the event is in draft status or live status I never get the option - it's like it doesn't exist. When I search the Polls app I see it, and I can add it to chats or meetings, so I know it's working. Why is ALL the documentation online about needing a Premium license to add Polls to a Teams Town Hall event incorrect? What is Microsoft doing to solve this? Ever since we moved to the new Real Time Marketing app from Outbound Marketing it has been 1 problem after another.

    Hi @Matthew Formisano

Thank you for reaching out regarding the unavailability of the Polls feature within your Microsoft Teams Town Hall events.

I understand how essential this functionality is for your organization’s engagement goals, especially when the necessary Premium licensing is already in place.

Based on current technical requirements, please consider the following points to ensure the environment is correctly configured:

    • Organizer licensing: The functionality of a Town Hall is tied directly to the person who creates the event. The designated organizer must have a Teams Premium license actively assigned to their account. If the event is scheduled by someone without this license, Premium features like Polls will not be available, even if other presenters hold Premium status.
    • Administrative policies: Beyond licensing, your IT administrator must explicitly allow "Premium apps" for Town Halls within the Teams Events Policy. Specifically, the BroadcastPremiumApps setting must be enabled at the tenant level. If this policy is restricted, the Polls option will remain unavailable regardless of your license.
    • Pre-Event configuration:
      • Polls must be manually added to the event before it starts.
      • This configuration should be performed using the Teams desktop client (Windows or Mac) while the event is in the scheduling or "Draft" phase. Please note that the app cannot be added once the event is live.

Note: Should these configurations be confirmed and the feature remains unavailable, it may indicate a service-level discrepancy necessitating direct technical validation. In such circumstances, I recommend coordinating with Microsoft Support to perform a comprehensive audit of your tenant’s policy alignment to ensure the Polls service is correctly provisioned for your Town Hall environment.

If you do not have administrative access, please contact your internal IT department to request that a formal support ticket be submitted on your behalf.  For detailed instructions on how to get support, please refer to Get support - Microsoft 365 admin

I appreciate your patience and understanding as you resolve this matter.
