Hello,

I am trying to activate Windows Server 2022 Standard, but activation keeps failing.

Error code: 0x87e10bc6

I have already performed the following:

  • Reinstalled Windows Server 2022
  • Converted from Evaluation to Standard edition
  • Verified network connectivity (internet and DNS are working)
  • Reset WinHTTP proxy and firewall settings
  • Confirmed activation server is reachable via nslookup

However, activation still fails.

License information shows:

Channel: OEM_COA_NSLP

This system was previously activated before formatting, using the same hardware (same motherboard).

Could you please help verify whether this product key can still be used, or advise on how to properly activate Windows in this case?

Thank you.

    Hi Cheolmin,

You need to use a valid retail or volume license key that matches Windows Server 2022 Standard. If you only have the OEM key, you must reinstall using the OEM recovery media provided by the hardware vendor, as that is the only supported way to reactivate with OEM_COA_NSLP keys. If the server was previously activated with a retail or volume key, you should re‑enter that key using slmgr /ipk <productkey> followed by slmgr /ato. If you are unsure of the license type, check with your vendor or licensing portal, because Microsoft does not allow OEM keys to be transferred across clean installs or edition upgrades.

To sum up, the product key you have cannot be reused in the current installation path. You will need either the proper retail/volume key for Server 2022 Standard or to reinstall with OEM recovery media to restore activation.

Let me know you need further assistant, please feel free to hit accept answer if you find this information helpful to you.

    Harry.

Error 0x87e10bc6 indicates an issue with the activation server or licensing service on Microsoft’s side.

For this error, the documented guidance is:

    1. Open Activation settings on the server.
    2. Run the Activation troubleshooter.
    3. If the troubleshooter completes but activation is still not successful, wait a few minutes and retry activation.

Because this is a Windows Server OEM key and the system was previously activated on the same hardware, the key should normally remain valid, but key validity itself cannot be verified here. If the error persists after using the Activation troubleshooter and retrying, contact the OEM or Microsoft Support with the product key and proof of purchase so they can:

    • Check whether the key is blocked or exhausted.
    • Confirm that the key matches the installed edition (Windows Server 2022 Standard OEM).
    • Assist with phone or manual activation if required.

If activation fails with a different error code after running the troubleshooter, use that new code with the Windows activation error documentation or the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA) for KMS/MAK scenarios.
