Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Follow these steps to get Office 2024 working on the new laptop:
- Uninstall older/incorrect Office versions
- In Windows 11, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall any of the following if they appear:
- Microsoft 365 / Office 365
- Office Trial
- Office 2019 / Office 2021
- Any other Office edition you don’t intend to use
- Restart the laptop after uninstalling.
- Do not try to reuse the product key directly
- The Office 2024 product key is used once to redeem and bind the license to a Microsoft account.
- After redemption, reinstallations are done by signing in with that same Microsoft account, not by entering the key again. That is why the key now shows as already used.
- Reinstall Office 2024 from the Microsoft account
- Open a browser and sign in to the Microsoft account that was used when Office 2024 was first redeemed/purchased.
- Go to the Services & subscriptions page for that account.
- Under Services & subscriptions, locate Office Home 2024 (or the exact Office 2024 product purchased).
- Next to it, select Install > Install on this device.
- This downloads the correct Office 2024 installer for that license.
- Run the downloaded setup file and complete the installation.
- Activate Office 2024
- Open Word or Excel after installation.
- When prompted, sign in with the same Microsoft account used above.
- Confirm activation status under File > Account; it should show the Office 2024 product as activated.
- If Office apps still seem missing
- Use Windows search on the taskbar and type the app name, for example Word or Excel, and open it from the results.

If Office 2024 does not appear under Services & subscriptions, it may have been redeemed under a different Microsoft account; in that case, sign out and try any other Microsoft accounts that might have been used.
