Try these steps on the Surface Laptop to improve a noisy or unclear microphone recording:

1. Check basic hardware

• If using a headset or external mic, make sure any physical Mute switch is off.
• Ensure the microphone or headset is firmly connected. If it’s Bluetooth, confirm it is paired and connected.

2. Set the correct input device

• Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
• Under Input, in Choose a device for speaking or recording, select the built‑in microphone (or the mic you want to use).

3. Test and adjust microphone level (Windows 11)

• In Settings > System > Sound, under Input, select your microphone.
• On the microphone properties page, under Microphone test, select Start test and speak normally.
• Select Stop test, then Play the recorded sample.
• If the voice is too quiet or drowned by noise, adjust the Input volume slider until the voice is clear and loud enough.

4. If volume is very low or seems not to work at all

• Confirm the mic is positioned correctly and not covered.
• Repeat the Start test / Stop test / Play steps and keep adjusting Input volume until the recording sounds better.

5. If Windows does not detect or use the mic correctly

• Right‑click Start and select Device Manager.
• Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
• Right‑click the audio device (for example, Realtek/Surface audio) and select Uninstall device.
• Check Attempt to remove the driver for this device (or Delete the driver software for this device if shown), then select Uninstall.
• Restart the Surface Laptop so Windows reinstalls the audio device and drivers automatically.
• If needed, go back to Device Manager, right‑click Sound, video and game controllers, and select Scan for hardware changes, then right‑click the audio driver and choose Update driver.

6. Run the Windows audio troubleshooter

• Go to Settings > System > Sound.
• Scroll down to Advanced and choose Input devices under Troubleshoot common sound problems.
• Follow the on‑screen steps and apply any fixes it suggests.

After these steps, record a short test video again and check if the background noise is reduced and the voice is clearer.
