Setting up new PC

I did a factory reset on a laptop and was setting it up for another user and at the screen where it asked to "Install Microsoft Authenticator", I left it and when I woke the computer up from going to sleep, it was password protected and I had not issued a password yet. How can I bypass this? There is no other option to choose from except for the email name I had already signed in to and when I try that password, it says it is incorrect.

    Hi Jennie West,

Please reset your laptop again following Reset your PC guide and expand the Reset your PC from Windows RE section.

If you are willing to give your laptop to another user, you may shut it down after resetting progress so they will set up the user next time the laptop is turned on.

I hope that above information is helpful to you.

    Hello,

Since you mentioned that you were setting up the PC for another user, it sounds like this device was intended to be handed over to someone else.

In that case, the best approach is to reset the PC to factory default settings again.

After the reset completes and the initial setup screen appears, do not continue with any part of the setup.

Instead, please hold down the power button to turn the PC off.

Then, power it on once more and confirm that it shows the initial setup screen.

After confirming that, turn the PC off again.

Because the Microsoft account sign-in was started during setup, Windows has already linked the device to that account and now expects that account’s password or a valid sign-in method. There is no supported way to “bypass” this lock screen; access must be restored using a valid account or by resetting the device again.

Use one of these supported paths:

    1. Verify and reset the Microsoft account password
    • On another device, go to the Microsoft account sign-in page and use the “forgot password” flow for the email shown on the lock screen.
    • Complete verification using the available security methods (text, email, or authenticator if configured).
    • After successfully changing the password, return to the laptop and sign in with the new password.
    1. If the account is a local account and another admin exists If, during setup, a local account was created and there is another administrator account on the PC (for example, an OEM admin account), that admin can reset the password:
    2. Sign in with the existing administrator account.
    3. Open Computer Management.
    4. Expand Local Users and Groups > Users.
    5. Right-click the affected user and select Set Password....
    6. Enter and confirm a new password, then sign out and sign in as that user.

If there is no other administrator account available, Windows requires a reset of the device.

    1. Reset the PC if sign-in cannot be recovered If the Microsoft account password cannot be recovered or no admin account can sign in:
    • Use the Windows recovery/reset options to reset the PC again. This will remove apps and accounts from the device. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform a reset and then complete setup, ensuring the correct account and password are used.

There is no supported method to bypass the sign-in requirement without either successfully authenticating the configured account or resetting the device.
