Audio is missing from my laptop after an update. I've looked and realize it needs to be reinstalled. What audio devise do I install? I went to Acer's website and there are a lot of audio drivers.

Thank you,

RH

    Hi Rachel Hanley,

The manufactural may publish multiple audio drivers based on hardware revisions and updated versions.

If you have difficulty finding the right one, please provide your laptop model. I will look that up and help you choose the right drivers for your laptop.

    Thank you for your time.

Search for audio drivers specific to your device model on device manufacturer's website.

For an Acer laptop running Windows 11, the exact audio driver depends on the specific model, so use the model‑matched driver from Acer rather than guessing a device name.

Use this sequence to get audio working again:

    1. Let Windows try to fix it automatically
      1. Press Windows key + XDevice Manager.
      2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      3. Right‑click your audio device (for example, Realtek, Intel, or High Definition Audio) → Update driverSearch automatically for drivers and complete the wizard.
      4. Restart the PC.
    2. If audio still does not work, reinstall the driver
      1. In Device Manager, under Sound, video and game controllers, right‑click the audio device → Uninstall device.
      2. If you see Attempt to remove the driver for this device (or similar), select it.
      3. Select Uninstall.
      4. Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls an audio driver automatically.
    3. If Windows’ driver does not solve it, use Acer’s driver for your exact model
      1. Go to Acer’s support site and search by the exact laptop model (for example, “Acer Aspire A515‑56” – use the label on the bottom of the laptop or in BIOS/packaging).
      2. In the Drivers section, under Audio, download the Windows 11 audio driver listed for that model (often Realtek or similar).
      3. Run the downloaded installer and follow its instructions.
      4. Restart the PC.
    4. If the problem started right after a Windows Update
      1. Open Device Manager → expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      2. Right‑click the audio device → PropertiesDriver tab.
      3. Select Roll Back Driver (if available) and follow the prompts.
      4. Restart and test audio.

If none of these steps restore sound, use the built‑in audio troubleshooter and then repeat the driver steps above.
