My Azure Databricks workspace has been stuck in Deleting for 4 days, and I need help.

Problem

  • I started deleting the Azure Databricks workspace from the Azure portal.
  • The workspace has remained in Deleting state for 4 days.
  • I can no longer launch the workspace because the Launch Workspace button is gone.
  • I cannot cancel the deletion.
  • I am still being charged about $2 per day while it is stuck deleting.

What I already tried

Refreshed the Azure portal many times

Checked Activity Log

  • Tried Azure CLI deletion again, but got:
    • ApplianceBeingDeleted
    • “The operation cannot be performed on the appliance ‘databricks’ because it is being deleted”

    Hi @Charley
We identified that the workspace deletion was getting stuck due to a backend issue where the delete operation was not completing successfully. Our internal team reset the workspace state from “Deleting” to “Failed”, which allowed the deletion process to be retried.

After that, the workspace was successfully deleted.

If anyone else runs into a similar issue where the workspace stays in Deleting for a long time and force delete does not work, the recommended approach is:

    • Wait for backend validation
    • Reset the state (via support)
    • Retry deletion

    Thanks again for your cooperation!

If the issue persists, please share the error details and we’ll be happy to assist further.

Hope this helps. Do let us know if you any further queries.

    Hello **Charley ,

**Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q and A Forums,

Generally, you can’t cancel or fix this fully yourself once backend deletion is stuck → Microsoft support must force-clean it.

    Things to do :

    1. Check for Resource Locks & Remove if present.
      1. az lock list --resource-group <rg-name>
    2. Sometimes backend cleanup retries take time (but 4 days = abnormal) ,
    3. Raise Microsoft Support Ticket Category: Azure Databricks → Workspace Management Mention: Stuck in Deleting > 4 days | Error: ApplianceBeingDeleted | Still incurring charges
    4. Billing note: Ask support for refund/credit for stuck deletion period—they usually approve.

Hope this was helpful , Do get back if you have any follow up questions and don't forget to Accept the answer if this was helpful .
