I am attempting to delete a private dns zone - and getting an error...

An Azure wizard (for creating a new managed Redis instance) led me to create a private DNS zone - that has the same name as another private DNS zone in a linked network. Now I'm trying to delete it - and it's telling me there are dependencies - and it is wrong. I am pretty sure it is confusing it with the identically named private dns zone from

The private DNS zone created by the Redis wizard (likely privatelink.redis.cache.windows.net) gets flagged for phantom dependencies, often due to name overlap with another zone in a linked VNet or resource group. Azure's backend sometimes holds onto stale metadata from virtual network links, even if none show up in the portal or initial CLI checks.

Steps:

• Start by listing any VNet links specific to your zone:

    az network private-dns link vnet list -g <your-rg> -z <your-zone-name>
  

• If results appear, delete each: az network private-dns link vnet delete -g <your-rg> --zone-name <your-zone-name> -n <link-name> -y.
• No links? It might be a cached reference check activity logs in the portal for the exact link ID from the error, then delete by ID: az network private-dns link vnet delete --ids <full-resource-id> -y
• With links gone, force-delete the zone:

    az network private-dns zone delete -g <your-rg> -n <your-zone-name> -y --no-wait
  

  • Wait 5-10 minutes for propagation.
  • Confirm: az network private-dns zone show -g <your-rg> -n <your-zone-name> (should 404).

And has support changed? Are these private support requests or am I posting this into a public forum? (I guess I'm about to find out).

To help you with above blocker , please try to execute below steps:

Firstly, can you please share the screenshot of the error message?

• Instead of usingRemove-AzResource, which is generally for Azure resources , try using following command to delete a DNS zone, this command targets the DNS zone directly .

PowerShell

Remove-AzDnsZone -Name "private.*****.com" -ResourceGroupName "***" 

• Sometimes resources get stuck in a failed state and cannot be deleted until its state is reset, so we can try a state reset which may trigger a new provisioning cycle and allow deletion afterward.

Use the following command to do above:

Set-AzPrivateDnsZone -ResourceGroupName "az104-rg4" -Name "private.acmecorp.com"

• Please find the below link for failed provisioning state referencehttps://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/networking/troubleshoot-failed-state If there are any dependencies in the Private DNS zone, deletion may not be possible, so please verify this as well.
