Issue with Intune macOS app (DMG) updates

Hello,

We observed an odd behavior when updating macOS app (DMG) in Intune - the new versions install inside the existing app bundle instead of replacing it.

The update reports as successful, but the application ends up nested inside the existing bundle (for example, /Applications/Visual Studio Code.app/Visual Studio Code.app) instead of replacing the original app.

Tested apps: Visual Studio Code, Microsoft Edge, Discord and others.

We followed the update instructions by editing the existing app instead of creating a new one. The app has the same bundle identifier as the original, and CFBundleShortVersionString was updated to the latest version string.

We opened a support ticket two weeks ago, and it still hasn’t been assigned to an agent.
Is this a known bug?

    Hello Artem Shaturskyi,

Sorry that you’re running into this issue. From what you’ve shared, it looks like you’ve followed the recommended process correctly.

One thing to double‑check is the Microsoft Intune management agent for macOS version. Please ensure the device is running version 2304.039 or later. If the agent version is older, updating it would be an important next step.

To better understand what’s happening on the device, could you also confirm the behavior observed after the app is targeted? Reviewing the logs on the device may help identify any deployment‑related errors or unexpected behavior during installation.

In the meantime, please share the support case number you’ve opened. I can check internally and help push for assignment so you can get timely assistance on this.

    Hope this helps!
