Hi Rebecca Brown,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum. I'm happy to help.
I'm really sorry to hear about the experience you’ve had with BitLocker.
BitLocker is a Windows security feature that protects your data by encrypting your drives. This encryption ensures that if someone tries to access a disk offline, they won't be able to read any of its content. BitLocker is particularly valuable if your device is lost or stolen, as it keeps your sensitive information secure.
You can find more information about BitLocker here: BitLocker overview.
If you prefer not to use BitLocker, you can safely turn it off after setting up Windows by following Turn Windows BitLocker on or off.
If you ever choose to re-enable BitLocker, I highly recommend manually saving your recovery key somewhere safe—whether that's your Microsoft account, a USB drive, printed copy, or password manager.
Again, I'm truly sorry for the frustration this caused and thank you for your sympathy.
