To regain access when Microsoft Authenticator was deleted and no other sign-in method works, the only supported options are:
- Try alternative sign-in or reset options (if available)
- On the sign-in screen, check for options like “Use a different verification option”, SMS, phone call, or email code.
- If you can use another method and sign in, immediately go to your security info page (for work/school: https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo) and:
- Add a new Authenticator app on your current phone, and/or
- Add backup methods (phone, SMS) so you are not locked out again.
- If no MFA method works and you are locked out of a personal Microsoft account
- Use the Sign-in Helper to diagnose and recover access: Sign-in Helper.
- If the issue is password or account recognition, follow the flows from:
- If this is a work or school (business) account and you can’t pass MFA
- Only an administrator or Microsoft support can reset MFA when all methods are blocked.
- If there is another admin in the organization, ask them to:
- Go to Azure portal → Microsoft Entra ID → Users → select your user.
- Open Authentication methods.
- Select Require re-register multifactor authentication so you can set MFA up again.
- After that, sign in again and reconfigure your Authenticator or other MFA methods.
- If you are the only admin and fully locked out of a business tenant
- This requires help from Microsoft’s Data Protection team via phone support.
- Call the regional Customer service phone numbers and, when the automated system asks:
- Problem: say “Authenticator” or “lost account”.
- Product: “Office 365 for business”.
- When asked: education or company account → “For companies”.
- Are you an administrator? → “Yes”.
- Any other administrators? → “No”.
- Do you need a service request? → “Yes, I need to create a ticket with the Data Protection team for MFA reset.”
- The Data Protection team will verify identity and can reset MFA so you can sign in again.
If phone support is hard to reach and this is a business tenant, one documented workaround is to create a temporary trial Microsoft 365 tenant, sign in as admin there, and open a support ticket from the new tenant asking the Data Protection team to help with the original locked tenant. After resolution, cancel the trial to avoid charges.
Once access is restored, add multiple MFA methods (Authenticator, SMS, phone) so deleting or losing the app does not lock you out again.
