On a Surface Laptop running Windows, this usually means Windows is not using the Beats as the active output device, or the device is muted/disabled at the system level.
Try these steps in order:
- Check physical/Bluetooth basics
- Make sure the Beats are fully powered on and properly paired/connected to the laptop.
- If they support wired mode and you are using a cable, verify the cable is fully inserted on both ends.
- Verify Windows is sending sound to the Beats (Windows 11)
- Select the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
- Select the arrow to the right of the volume slider (tool tip: Select a sound output).
- In the list of audio devices, select the Beats Studio Pro as the output device.
- If the Beats do not appear, they are not connected correctly; re-pair or reconnect them.
- Check volume and mute for apps and devices (Windows 11)
- Right‑click the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
- Select the settings icon next to the volume slider (tool tip: More mixer settings) to open Volume mixer.
- Make sure:
- The main output device (Beats) is not muted and has volume turned up.
- Individual apps (browser, media player, etc.) are not muted.
- Confirm the Beats are enabled, not disabled (Windows 11)
- Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the Beats device.
- Under Advanced, select More sound settings.
- On the Playback tab, select the Beats, then Properties.
- Next to Device usage, ensure Use this device (enable) is selected.
- Set Beats as default output (Windows 11)
- In Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the Beats. Selecting them here sets them as the default output device.
- Run the audio troubleshooter (Windows 11)
- Select Start > Settings > System.
- Select Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- In the Audio section, select Run and follow the prompts.
- Update or reinstall audio drivers If the Beats still show as connected but no sound plays:
- Open Device Manager (search for “device manager” from Start).
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right‑click the Surface audio device (and any Bluetooth audio device if listed) and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- If that does not help, in Device Manager, right‑click the audio device again and select Uninstall device, check Attempt to remove the driver for this device if available, then Uninstall.
- Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls the audio driver automatically.
If after these steps the laptop speakers work but the Beats never produce sound even when selected as the output device, test the Beats with another device (phone/tablet). If they work elsewhere, the issue is likely with Windows configuration or drivers; if they do not, the headphones may be faulty.
