I can't use my Teams Essentials - Log-in / Authenticator

On Nov. 29th 2024 I purchased Microsoft Teams Essentials on Microsoft.com, using my gmail e-mail address to register. I received the confirmation email (on the gmail address...) with a new sign in address (ending in "onmicrosoft.com") for Essentials . I complete the registration and it all worked fine for a few months, with Teams on my laptop showing two accounts (the *@gmail.com one and the [Moderator note: personal info removed]@myname.onmicrosoft.com one). When selecting the account to access to, the system asked for a check code, sent to the e-mail address I used to purchase Essentials. No issues.

Then, last summer Teams quit working: crashes, missing accounts at login issues. I uninstall the program and reinstall it. The gmail account worked fine, but when I've tried to login to the account "onmicrosoft.com" linked to the Teams Essential license, a code from Authenticator app was required, instead of the usual check code by e-mail. I installed the Authenticator app on my smartphone and tried to register the "onmicrosoft.com" account: but to register the account to the authenticator app a code from the authenticator app is required! I'm caught in a loop!

Non a big deal, I thought, I have to handle the limited meeting duration of the free Teams.

Then november 2025 comes, and I received a reminder of Teams Essentials licence automatical reweval. As I was not able to use it anymore, I tried to cancel my subscription. But account login is required, and the loop on Authenticator comes in...

Microsoft technical on line support was not helpful: the gmail account works but the onmicrosoft.com one "does not exist".

Direct support, or even a chat line or and e-mail is not available.

Hope you can help.

    Dear @Ezio Ragazzi,

Good day! Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum!

Based on your description, I understand that you purchased Microsoft Teams Essentials using a Gmail address, but are now unable to access or manage the subscription due to an authentication loop involving the onmicrosoft.com account and the Microsoft Authenticator app.

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused by this issue. I'm sorry to hear that you have not been able to get effective assistance through Microsoft’s available support channels.

Regarding your situation, if you're the only admin of your tenant that you purchased Teams Essentials, in this situation, the Microsoft Data Protection Team has tools and processes in place to verify identity and regain access to administrator accounts.

Please note that forum moderators have no control over user accounts, especially when it comes to logging in to your account, resetting your password, changing your access, etc.

Since you didn't get suitable support from Phone Support, as an alternative, you can create a new tenant account and submit your request from there.

To set up a new tenant, please follow these steps:

Once your tenant is created, you should be able to access the support portal and submit your ticket referencing your locked account without further issues.

In the ticket's description, you could refer to this message "Hello,

I am currently locked out of my Microsoft 365 tenant because multi-factor authentication is enforced, and I am unable to complete the verification process. I am the only global administrator for this tenant, which means I cannot access my account or the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.

To resolve this, I have created a new tenant and would like to be connected with the Data Protection Team to verify my identity and assist with regaining access. I am available to provide any required documentation or verification to support the recovery process."

Ticket Support: Log in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center using your newly created trial admin account > Support > Help & Support. You can raise support ticket at: https://admin.microsoft.com/#/support/requests

After completing them, you will receive an email appointment for a meeting to review this issue professionally together.

For more details, you could refer to this article: Get support for Microsoft 365 for business

Please remember to cancel the trial subscription once your issue is resolved to avoid any unintended charges.

Note: After creating the support ticket, please kindly let me know the ticket number so I could also track its process to help you regain access to your account/tenant.

Kindly let me know when there are updates or if you need further assistance. Any updates you’re able to share would be really helpful.

I'm here and happy to help! Thank you for your kindness and patience!

The Teams Essentials account uses Microsoft Entra identity and is now protected by multifactor authentication (MFA) with Microsoft Authenticator. Because the Authenticator registration is broken and there is no alternative sign-in method, access to that tenant must be restored by an administrator or by Microsoft’s Data Protection team.

Actionable options based on the scenario:

    1. Try any alternative MFA/sign-in methods
    • If any other verification method was ever configured for the …onmicrosoft.com account (SMS, phone call, backup email, security key), use that instead of Authenticator when prompted.
    • If an alternative method works and sign-in succeeds, go to the security/MFA settings for the account and:
      • Remove the old Authenticator registration.
      • Re-add Microsoft Authenticator by scanning the new QR code.
    1. If this is a business/Teams Essentials tenant and there is another admin
    • Any other global admin in the same tenant can reset MFA for the locked account in Microsoft Entra admin center (Users → select the user → Authentication methods → “Require re-register multifactor authentication”).
    • After that reset, sign in again with the …onmicrosoft.com account and complete MFA setup from scratch in the Authenticator app.
    1. If this is a business/Teams Essentials tenant and there is only one admin (the locked account)
    • This matches the documented “sole admin locked out by Authenticator” situation.
    • In this case, only Microsoft’s Data Protection team can restore access to the tenant and/or reset MFA.
    • To reach them:
      • Call the regional Microsoft customer service phone number listed under “Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support”.
      • When the IVR asks what the problem is, clearly indicate it is an Authenticator / MFA lockout on an Office 365/Teams for business account, and that this is the only admin account.
      • Ask the agent to open a service request and route it to the Data Protection team for tenant lockout / MFA reset on the …onmicrosoft.com tenant.
    • Be prepared to provide:
      • The full …onmicrosoft.com admin sign-in address.
      • The domain name of the tenant.
      • Proof that this is a business subscription and that this account is the global admin.
    1. If direct phone support is hard to reach
    • A documented workaround is to create a temporary trial Microsoft 365 tenant only to gain access to the Microsoft 365 admin center and open a support ticket:
      1. Sign up for a free Microsoft 365 trial tenant (any business plan) using a different email address.
      2. After the trial tenant is created, go to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
      3. Use “Help & support” to open a support ticket.
      4. In the ticket, clearly state that:
        • There is a separate existing Teams Essentials / Microsoft 365 tenant tied to …onmicrosoft.com.
        • The global admin for that tenant is locked out due to Microsoft Authenticator and has no alternative MFA method.
        • Request escalation to the Data Protection team to restore access to that original tenant.
      5. Once the original tenant access is restored and the subscription issue is resolved, cancel the trial tenant to avoid charges.
    1. Subscription cancellation
    • Cancellation of the Teams Essentials subscription must be done from the account/tenant that owns the subscription. Because sign-in is blocked by MFA, the only supported path is to restore access via steps 3 or 4, then:
      • Sign in to the appropriate admin/billing portal with the restored …onmicrosoft.com account.
      • Turn off recurring billing or cancel the subscription as documented under standard Microsoft account/billing help.
    1. If the account is actually a personal Microsoft account
    • If the …onmicrosoft.com identity were personal (not business), the correct path would be to use the Microsoft account sign-in helper and recovery flows. However, Teams Essentials for small business is documented as using Microsoft Entra identity, so the business/tenant path and Data Protection team escalation apply.

Because the …onmicrosoft.com tenant is reported as “does not exist” by front-line support while billing and email evidence show it does, escalation to the Data Protection team via phone or via a support ticket from a temporary trial tenant is required to reconcile the tenant identity, reset MFA, and then allow cancellation.
