My internal camera has stopped working on my Surface Laptop 3 (intel). I am running windows 11.

The error message when attempting to operate the camera is:

0xA00F4244 <NoCamerasAreAttached>

I have already:

Used inbuilt camera troubleshooter

Reset Computer

Rebooted to UEFI mode and ensured cameras are on

Checked antivirus and privacy settings

Reinstalled drivers

Checked device drivers - no camera or camera drivers are showing up in the device manager window

Please assist as the camera worked perfectly prior to this.

Thank you!

    Hi F

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Forum!

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this, it’s especially frustrating when hardware that was working perfectly suddenly disappears, and you’ve already done all the “right” troubleshooting steps.

Here are a few things you can try:

Step 1 - Install the Surface Laptop 3 firmware bundle

For Surface devices, generic driver reinstalls are not sufficient.

    1. Download the Surface Laptop 3 - Windows 11 Drivers and Firmware package from Microsoft
    2. Make sure you select:
      • Surface Laptop 3 (Intel)
        • Windows 11
        1. Run the downloaded .msi
        2. Reboot twice

This package installs Surface‑specific firmware and system drivers (including camera and Intel IPU components). If these are missing or corrupted, the camera will vanish entirely from Device Manager.

Step 2- Check Device Manager correctly

    After installing the firmware bundle:

    1. Open Device Manager
    2. Select View → Show hidden devices
    3. Check all of the following sections:
      • Cameras
      • Imaging devices
      • System devices
      • Universal Serial Bus controllers

    Look for anything camera‑related, including:

    • Surface Camera Front
    • Intel IPU / AVStream Camera
    • Unknown USB device

    If anything appears:

    • Right‑click → Uninstall device
    • Check Delete the driver software for this device
    • Reboot

If nothing camera‑related appears at all, continue.

    Step 3 - Force a Surface hardware re‑enumeration

This clears stuck firmware states that survive normal reboots.

    1. Shut down completely
    2. Unplug the charger
    3. Hold the Power button for 30 seconds
    4. Release, wait 10 seconds
    5. Power on normally

This step is especially important on Surface hardware when internal devices disappear.

Step 4 - Repair Windows without losing data

If the camera worked previously on this machine:

    1. Go to Settings → System → Recovery
    2. Choose Fix problems using Windows Update
    3. Select Reinstall now

This reinstalls Windows system components while keeping files and apps intact and can restore missing hardware enumeration.

Hope this can help. Feel free to update here if anything comes up!
