How to reset downwards arrow button on keyboard

I have a Surface Laptop 4, and I must have accidentally clicked or amended something as my downwards arrow button will only take me further down to the next individual point on a page, rather than scrolling down the page as a whole.

How can I fix this please?

It sounds like you've accidentally enabled Caret Browsing mode! This is a common issue that happens when you press F7.

Press F7 on your keyboard. You should see a dialog box asking if you want to turn off Caret Browsing - click "Yes" or "Turn off."

    Hi Rosie,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand how confusing it can be when a familiar keyboard behavior suddenly changes, especially when you rely on it for everyday navigation.

From what you described, this may happen when a built‑in accessibility feature called Caret Browsing is turned on accidentally. When this feature is active, the Down Arrow key moves a text cursor line‑by‑line instead of scrolling the page, which can make it feel like the keyboard isn’t working correctly. This can be triggered unintentionally by pressing the F7 key:

    1. Click once anywhere on the page where the issue occurs.
    2. Press F7 on the keyboard.
    3. If prompted, choose Turn off.

This should immediately restore normal scrolling behavior with the arrow keys.

    If the issue continues:

    • In Microsoft Edge: Open Settings > Accessibility > Turn off “Navigate pages with a text cursor.”
    • Also make sure that accessibility options such as Sticky Keys, Filter Keys or Scroll Lock are turned off in Windows keyboard settings.

Besides, please also let me know:

    • Which app or browser you’re seeing this in, or
    • Whether the behavior happens everywhere or only on certain pages

Please keep me posted on how it goes and feel free to reach out if you need any further assistance. I’ll be happy to help further.

It sounds like your downwards arrow key may be functioning in a different mode, possibly due to a setting or application that has changed its behavior. Here are a few steps you can try to reset or fix the functionality of your downwards arrow key:

    1. Check Scroll Lock: Ensure that the Scroll Lock feature is not enabled, as this can change how the arrow keys behave.
    2. Keyboard Settings: Go to your keyboard settings in Windows and ensure that there are no special settings enabled that might affect the arrow keys.
    3. Restart Your Laptop: Sometimes, simply restarting your device can resolve temporary glitches.
    4. Update Drivers: Make sure your keyboard drivers are up to date. You can check this in Device Manager.
    5. Test in Different Applications: Try using the downwards arrow key in different applications (like Notepad or a web browser) to see if the issue persists across all programs.
    6. External Keyboard: If possible, connect an external keyboard to see if the issue is with the laptop's keyboard or a software setting.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, you may want to consider resetting your keyboard settings or checking for any software that may have altered the keyboard's functionality.
