Dear @Angela Cruz,
Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.
I understand that you have some questions regarding Teams recording, and I’m happy to assist. Based on current functionality, meetings in Microsoft Teams are not recorded automatically by default. Recording must be enabled for each individual meeting or meeting series unless your administrator has configured specific policies or templates to enable automatic recording organization-wide.
You (as the organizer) can enable automatic recording before the meeting by following these steps:
- Schedule or edit a meeting in Teams (via the Calendar tab) or in Outlook.
- In the meeting invitation/details pane (before sending or while editing), select Meeting options (usually located near the bottom right of the meeting window).
- In the Meeting options window, locate Record and transcribe automatically and toggle it On.
- Click Apply.
With this setting enabled, the recording will start automatically when the meeting begins (typically when the first participant joins, including the organizer).
If you're joining an existing meeting and want to record it right away:
- Click the More actions (...) in meeting controls.
- Select Record and transcribe > Start recording.
- Confirm, and it starts (with notification to all).
Notes:
- Your Microsoft 365 license must support recording. Most Business and Enterprise plans include this feature; some Education plans (such as A1) may not support automatic recording.
- Administrators control who can record meetings through Meeting policies in the Teams Admin Center. The Allow cloud recording setting must be enabled for your account.
- For organization-wide or specific meeting types (for example, all team meetings), administrators can use custom meeting templates (Teams Premium may be required for certain features) or apply policies via PowerShell to control access to automatic recording.
- There is no simple tenant-wide “record everything automatically” toggle without administrative configuration. Recording is typically configured per meeting or via templates to ensure privacy and compliance requirements are met.
- For webinars or town halls, automatic recording is often enabled by default if your organization has Teams Premium.
I hope this information helps clarify the situation and provides you with a workable solution. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments so I can continue to support you. I look forward to your reply.
