Surface Laptop (Copilot+ PC 15") power button unresponsive on battery below ~80%

Hello,

I have recently purchased a Surface Laptop Copilot+ PC (15-inch), and I am experiencing an issue with powering on the device.

When the laptop is shut down, I often need to press the power button for a long time or multiple times before the Windows logo appears and the system starts. The device is brand new.

After spending significant time investigating, I was able to consistently reproduce the issue and identify a specific pattern on Surface Laptop 7:

Observed behavior:

The issue occurs only when running on battery power

There appears to be a battery charge threshold at approximately 80%

  • =80% battery - power button works normally
  • < 80% battery - power button often becomes unresponsive and requires multiple presses

Holding the power button for ~20 seconds will usually force the device to start

When the AC adapter is connected, the laptop always powers on correctly on the first press

The issue occurs before the OS boots

All firmware components (UEFI / SAM) are fully up to date

I would kindly ask other users who experience similar issues to check whether their devices show the same behavior related to battery level.

Question to Microsoft Support:

Is this a known issue, and is there a planned firmware or BIOS update to address it? At the moment, I cannot reliably depend on this laptop for important work or business trips, as I am concerned it may fail to power on when needed.

Thank you in advance for any guidance or official clarification.

    Hi Ihor Podtepa,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A!

I’m really sorry to hear you’re dealing with this on a brand‑new Surface Laptop Copilot+ PC. I know how worrying it is when a device doesn’t power on reliably, especially one you depend on for work or travel.

However, please note that this is just a user-to-user support forum, limited to providing technical guidance on reported issues. Moderators, contributors, including external Microsoft staff, cannot directly intervene in Microsoft product features or access back-end systems to confirm anything.

Given these limitations, and as Microsoft has not publicly announced anything about this pattern, the more appropriate avenue for your question is to submit feedback through the official Microsoft channels: press Win + F on your Windows to open Feedback Hub, or use the Surface app (often built-in).

In addition, if you want to reach out to Microsoft Support, here's the official path:

    1. Visit Contact Us - Microsoft Support > Sign in
    2. Type in your problem > click Get Help to make request
    3. Scroll to the bottom and click Contact Support to connect to agent
    4. Select category again > click Next and you should be added to a chat queue

Note: The support contact team only works at certain times, so if the last window shows that it's unavailable, try opening it again the next day. If you prefer phone support, you can leave a phone number. This way, they can call you and help you.

I'm sorry for not being to provide further help. A brand‑new Surface really should not behave this way. If the issue is tied to battery level, it may indicate a faulty power‑management circuit or a firmware defect.

As your device is likely still under warranty, you can also consider if a repair / replacement is appropriate. Check out: How to get service or repair for Surface - Microsoft Support. Thanks for your time!
