Changing between multiple Microsoft Teams accounts within the app or browser
Hi @Patrick Alesia,
Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A forum.
Thank you very much for reaching out to me regarding the issue you're experiencing when trying to switch from your personal Microsoft account to your business account in Microsoft Teams. I appreciate your patience and the details you provided.
Based on your description, it looks like Teams is automatically signing you back into your personal account, which prevents you from accessing your business profile.
This behavior can occur when Teams continues to use cached personal-account credentials, Windows still stores old authentication tokens, the built‑in Teams Personal app automatically launches and takes priority, or when both a Microsoft Personal and a Work/School account exist and Teams defaults to the personal one unless the cache is fully cleared.
Here are my recommendations, which I hope will be helpful to you:
1/ Fully sign out of Microsoft Teams
Please ensure that Teams is completely closed, not just minimized.
- Click on your profile picture in Teams > Sign out.
- After you sign out, Teams may stay running in the background. To ensure it is fully closed:
- Right‑click the Teams icon in the system tray (bottom-right corner).
- Click Quit.
- You can also open Task Manager > Processes >right‑click Microsoft Teams > End task.
-
2/ Clear the Teams cache manually
Teams stores authentication tokens and session data in a hidden directory, and clearing this folder forces the application to regenerate all sign‑in information, ensuring it does not reload any outdated session data. Please:
- Press Windows + R to open the Run window.
- Type the following path and press Enter: %localappdata%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe
-
- Delete all folders and files inside.
3/ Remove saved credentials from Windows Credential Manager
Even after clearing cache, Windows may still save your personal account token. Removing it prevents auto‑login, please:
- Open the Control Panel > Credential Manager >Windows Credentials.
- Look for any entries named:
- MicrosoftOffice
- MicrosoftAccount
- Teams
- Office16
- Anything with your personal email
-
- Click on each one > select Remove.
4/ Contact Microsoft Support
If the issue persists even after these steps, it may stem from a deeper system-level cause. In this case, I recommend contacting your organization's IT administrator, who can submit a support request to Microsoft through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. They’ll be able to access system-level information to investigate the issue thoroughly and provide assistance. At the very least, they can offer the most effective workaround to ensure your experience remains smooth and secure.
We kindly ask for your understanding that, as moderators, we do not have access to the administrative tools or permissions required to investigate or modify these configurations. We also do not have the capability to initiate remote sessions for direct assistance. Our role is to guide users to the appropriate resources and support channels.
I hope this information is helpful. Please follow these steps and let me know if it works for you. If not, please feel free to share them in the comments on this post so I can continue to support you.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this.
