Hello,
Thanks for reaching out and I appreciate you sharing the details of your experience. I understand how frustrating it must be to deal with AirPods that were working perfectly and now suddenly refuse to connect properly especially after trying so many solutions.
The behavior you're describing AirPods connecting only as a microphone, showing up as "hands-free" or not appearing as an output device is a known issue that can stem from how Windows handles Bluetooth audio profiles. Windows often defaults to the "Hands-Free Profile (HFP)" for Bluetooth headsets which is optimized for calls but results in poor audio quality. Disabling this profile can sometimes cause the AirPods to disappear entirely from the output list as you’ve experienced.
Another solution you can try involves fully removing the Bluetooth and audio drivers associated with your AirPods not just reinstalling them.
Here’s how while your AirPods are still connected open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start icon. Expand both Bluetooth and Sound Video and Game Controllers. Locate any entries related to your AirPods right-click them and choose Uninstall device. Make sure to check the box that says “Delete the driver software for this device” if available. Once removed, restart your PC, reset your AirPods and then pair them again.
This method ensures that any corrupted or incompatible driver remnants are completely wiped before reinstallation which can help Windows properly recognize your AirPods as both input and output devices.
Out of curiosity, have you noticed if this issue started right after a specific Windows update or driver installation?
I hope this answer is helpful if you have further questions feel free to reply back
Regards,
Marcelo
