Airpods not connecting properly.

My airpods were working just fine until recently, where they either, wouldn't connect, would connect but wouldn't show up as an output device, or would connect as mic only, showing up as "Airpods hands free" on output, and having horribly audio quality.

I've tried just about everything I've seen on the internet and more, yet no matter what I do, I just get stuck back at square one.

My current situation is that I've tried to disable Airpods hands free countless times, but all that does it just make my Airpods not show up as an output entirely.
I've done

checked for windows updates numerous times (only one update occurred which got me to where I am now)
Reinstalled bluetooth and audio drivers
CONSTANTLY factory resetted my Airpods
CONSTANTLY removed my airpods from my PC entirely just to connect them again
CONSTANTLY disabled "airpods hands free", which again has only made things worse,
and way more.
I'm on the verge of giving up at this point.

    Hello,

Thanks for reaching out and I appreciate you sharing the details of your experience. I understand how frustrating it must be to deal with AirPods that were working perfectly and now suddenly refuse to connect properly especially after trying so many solutions.

The behavior you're describing AirPods connecting only as a microphone, showing up as "hands-free" or not appearing as an output device is a known issue that can stem from how Windows handles Bluetooth audio profiles. Windows often defaults to the "Hands-Free Profile (HFP)" for Bluetooth headsets which is optimized for calls but results in poor audio quality. Disabling this profile can sometimes cause the AirPods to disappear entirely from the output list as you’ve experienced.

Another solution you can try involves fully removing the Bluetooth and audio drivers associated with your AirPods not just reinstalling them.

Here’s how while your AirPods are still connected open Device Manager by right-clicking the Start icon. Expand both Bluetooth and Sound Video and Game Controllers. Locate any entries related to your AirPods right-click them and choose Uninstall device. Make sure to check the box that says “Delete the driver software for this device” if available. Once removed, restart your PC, reset your AirPods and then pair them again.

This method ensures that any corrupted or incompatible driver remnants are completely wiped before reinstallation which can help Windows properly recognize your AirPods as both input and output devices.

Out of curiosity, have you noticed if this issue started right after a specific Windows update or driver installation?

I hope this answer is helpful if you have further questions feel free to reply back

    Regards,

    Marcelo

It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with your AirPods not connecting properly to your Windows PC. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

    1. Disable Exclusive Mode: Sometimes, Bluetooth devices can have issues due to exclusive control settings. To disable this, go to Settings > System > Sound, then select Advanced > More sound settings. In the Sound dialog box, select your AirPods, click on Properties, go to the Advanced tab, and uncheck Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device. Click Apply.
    2. Check Bluetooth Drivers: Make sure your Bluetooth drivers are up to date. You mentioned reinstalling them, but it's worth checking again for any updates or reinstalling them from the manufacturer's website.
    3. Remove and Re-Pair: Since you've already tried removing and reconnecting your AirPods, ensure that they are completely unpaired from your PC. Then, reset your AirPods by holding the setup button until the light flashes amber, then white. After that, try pairing them again.
    4. Use USB Dongle: If you're still having issues, consider using a USB Bluetooth dongle. Sometimes, the built-in Bluetooth radio on PCs can have compatibility issues with certain devices, and a dongle may provide a more stable connection.
    5. Check Windows Updates: Ensure that your Windows is fully updated, as updates can sometimes resolve connectivity issues.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, it may be worth checking the performance of your AirPods with another device to rule out hardware issues.
